Orma Jean Johnson

Orma Jean Alder Johnson was born in Avon, UT on July 7, 1925 to Fred and Estella Alder. She was the oldest of 11 children. Most of her early years were spent in Providence, UT across from the old elementary school. She attended Cache County Schools including Providence elementary and later South Cache High School. Summers were often spent in Pocatello Valley working on the family farm where she learned to cook and grow things.

While in high school she met Fellger Johnson at a community dance and fell in love. They were engaged in 1943 shortly before Fellger left for service in the U.S. Navy during WWII. While waiting for him to return, Orma Jean attended beauty college in Salt Lake City living in the Beehive house. Fellger and Orma Jean were married on May 21, 1946 in the Logan temple after his return from the war.

In 1950 they built their home in River Heights on Summerwild Avenue and there raised their three children. Orma Jean was a career beautician, operating a beauty shop in her home where she accumulated many clients who became lifelong friends and who continued to have Orma Jean do their hair until the time of her death. She also took her beautician talents to Williamsburgh Retirement Center serving residents there for several years. Residents of River Heights will remember her beautiful flower gardens, the vegetables that she grew, and the many afghans she knitted and quilts she made for family and friends. Her family and close friends will always remember her talent for candy making, baking cookies, playing card games with the young and old (which she generally won), and her endless service to anyone who needed it.

A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Orma Jean served faithfully in a variety of church callings including Primary, Young Women and Relief Society Presidencies. Later after Fellger had retired, they were called as Temple workers in the Logan temple where she served faithfully for 20 years.

Orma Jean loved her family and cherished the time she was able to spend with them. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling and camping with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fellger and Orma Jean could often be found at Aggie basketball games until it became too hard to get to their seats. She was also an avid Utah Jazz supporter and watched those games whenever she could. She belonged to many clubs including Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Lady Lions, and community book and pinochle clubs. She never stopped doing, or giving! Orma Jean lived every moment of a very full life dedicated to serving others, and in this continues to be an example to her children, grandchildren and others.

Orma Jean is survived by 3 brothers, 4 sisters, 3 children – Kallin (Linda) of Worcester MA, Russell (Pam) of Logan UT, and Karol Jean (Kerry) of Colorado Springs CO, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and one great granddaughter.



Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 am in the River Heights First Ward. There will be a viewing Friday evening from 6-8 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 - 10:45 am.
