Peggy Mae Benson Smith

October 20, 1935 — December 27, 2007

Logan, Utah: Peggy Mae Benson Smith died on Thursday December 27, 2007.
She was born in Teton City, Idaho to Ella Ree Llewellyn and Ivan Jesse Benson on October 20, 1935. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Newton where she spent her childhood. Her father passed away at a young age. It was her brothers Lynn and Joe who helped fill the void her father left. She went on to graduate form North Cache High School in 1953. She married William B. Smith in the Logan Temple on November 5, 1954.
Her joy in life was her 3 sons, whom she dearly loved. When her family was young, Peggy became the full time caretaker of her mother-in-law Mae. She lost both of her legs to diabetes, but Peggy never once complained about the added challenges and responsibilities. She learned and taught others the selfless act of service to all who knew her. This truly was a labor of love for her.
She returned to college in 1981 and earned her degree in Elementary Education in 1984. She had a great love for children and she substitute taught for 20 years until she suffered a stroke in April of 2004. Though we were told she would never walk again, her intense determination to return home led to her amazing recovery and returned home to celebrate her 50th anniversary in November of 2004. Thank you to ward members and neighbors who checked on them daily. She was able to spend almost a full year with her eternal companion until his death in October of 2005.
Her life was one of service. She loved making quilts and especially baby quilts.
If you had a baby, you received a quilt she made by hand. She also loved to garden and share the proceeds either fresh or canned, with her family and friends.
Peggy enjoyed making birthday, and holiday dinners for her family. Especially her fried chicken, homemade rolls and pies. She loved going for rides up the canyon and visiting family.
Mom had a special love for the gospel and was constantly reading to improve her knowledge of it. She especially loved doing Temple Work. Before her death she was able to write her father’s life history as it was told to her.
She is survived by her 2 sons Reese (Jenny) and Robert (Kristi) Smith of Logan.
Also 5 grandchildren all of Logan Jeff Smith, Shayna (Shawn)West, Tanner Smith, and McKaley Smith. She is also survived by 2 brothers Lynn (Lola) Benson of Salt Lake and Joe (Tammie) Benson of Logan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Her husband Bill, daughter Christine, and son David.
A special thanks to Dr. Salisbury and staff, the CNS Hospice Team, the caring staff at Williamsburg and her circle of friends at Williamsburg who were always doing what they could to help her. Our family can never express our gratitude enough to all of you. Peggy was the perfect example of service.
