Peter Delbert Burgess of Newtown Square, went to a better place on April 17, 2023. His hand was held by his wife, Mary, when he died.
Peter was born to Dr. J Paul Burgess and Alice (Richards) Burgess of Hyrum Utah on August 11, 1936. He grew up in the shadow of the beautiful Wasatch mountains and spent some time working as a cowboy on ranches in Idaho and outside of Jackson Hole, WY. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry at Utah State University in 1959.
He married his high school sweetheart Mary Brady on August 23, 1958, and shortly thereafter they found themselves at the American Institute for Foreign Trade in Glendale, AZ. This was a move that set them on a trajectory of a life full of interest and adventure.
Peter personified the international businessman -- working in the dairy and pharmaceutical industries, and living in many wonderful places, including Mexico, Peru, Brazil, and The Philippines. He travelled the world over, but always yearned for the cowboy life he missed. In addition to traveling, he was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed restoring antique cars. He also served as an Elder in the Newtown Square Presbyterian church for many years. He also enjoyed skiing, golfing, scuba diving, singing in the church choir, BBQing and, most of all, being with his family.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Mala (Poulson) Burgess and a brother, Stephen Burgess.
Peter is survived by his wife, Mary; their 2 children, Melissa (Rich) and Tim (Jean), 5 grandchildren: Stephen (Brenda), Christian (Kaitlin), Tanner (Vanessa), Paul (Maggie), and Kelsey, 2 great-grandchildren and his older brother, Richards (Dick) Burgess.
A memorial service will be held for Peter at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 5 at 1:00 p.m. Peter will be interred on Saturday, April 29 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hyrum City Cemetery in Hyrum, UT.
