Philip Alan Harrison, 73, of Hyrum, Utah, passed away on January 28, 2021, peacefully at his home, after a valiant three-year battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Phil was born on September 22, 1947, in Provo, Utah, the youngest of four children born to Bertrand Fereday Harrison and Lorna Jensen Harrison. He attended primary and secondary school in Provo and began his college education at Brigham Young University before serving a mission in Northern Germany for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married his sweetheart, Kathleen Francis, in the Salt Lake City Temple on December 17, 1969.
Phil graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelors degree in Botany and a Masters degree in Plant Physiology, followed by a PhD in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry from the University of Georgia.
After living in the Ithaca, NY area and Salinas, CA, the family made their home in Hyrum, UT in 1984. Phil worked at the USDA Forage and Range Research Lab at Utah State University until he retired in 2011.
Phil and Kathy were married for nearly 29 years before she passed away in August of 1998. Phil fell in love with Rose Colleen Campion and they were married in January of 1999. Phil later adopted four of Colleen’s adult children.
Phil is survived by his wife, Colleen Harrison, his three siblings, B. Kent Harrison, (Janice), Provo, UT; Linnaea Lindstrom, (Brent), Orem, UT, Chris Harrison, (Jacci), Provo, UT; his and Kathy’s five children, Ben Harrison, (Heather), San Antonio, TX; Melissa Mickelson, (Brad), Glasgow, MT; Cyndi Elliott, (Brandon), Katy, TX; Joey Harrison, (Britta), Springfield, VA; Jake Harrison, (Sarah), Troy, IL; his and Colleen’s 11 children, Christopher Harrison, (Simone), Layton, UT; Lynn Bernhard, (Sonya), Ogden, UT; Melynda Fitt (Jeff), Nephi, UT; Joseph Bernhard, (Kerilyn), Herriman, UT; John Bernhard, (Claudia), Lake Forrest, CA; Melynie Bernhard, American Fork, UT; Ellynore Banks, Nephi, UT; Angelyn “Luna” Garff, Salt Lake City, UT; Nathan Bernhard, (JoAnna), Logan, UT; Spencer Harrison, (Tara), San Tan Valley, AZ; and Julyn “Jules” Harrison, Hyrum, UT; and 48 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Harrison, his sister-in-law, Janice Harrison, and Colleen’s daughter, Carolyn Bernhard.
Graveside services for family and close friends will be held on Monday, February 1 at the Hyrum City Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. In observance of COVID protocols, masks and social distancing will be required for in-person attendance.
