For almost nine and a half years, our Daddy, Jack Burton, has waited by the veil for his beloved wife, Priel Covert Burton, as she blessed the lives of her family and all who knew her. We, her children and grandchildren, begged him to be patient as we enjoyed her here. On Friday evening, July 20, Dad’s patience was rewarded, as Heavenly Father called her home, after her 92 year sojourn here on earth. Awww, the reunion they must be having now.
Born on July 15, 1920, in Thatcher, Idaho, to Tomas and Emily Covert, Priel was ever the simple farm girl. There she loved to ride horses and learned to help things grow. Throughout her life there were always plants in her home and flower and vegetable gardens outside that she lovingly tended with her green thumb. When she was 15 the Covert family left the farm and moved to Logan. They resided on the”Island” just down the street from Central Park. She graduated from Logan High and went to work cleaning homes for local families and as a maid at the Burnham Hotel in Preston. She often commented that her greatest talent was to be able to keep a clean home – and she always did. During World War II she was a “Rosie the Riveter” when she worked at Remington Arms. She was also a waitress for the original Maddox Restaurant in Brigham City. Following the war she was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern Saints Mission. There she developed a life-long testimony of the gospel.
Upon her return she met John H. Burton, Sr. and on April 12, 1948 they were married in the Logan LDS Temple. Hers was the hand that reached into the “foreboding darkness” he was experiencing due to his horrible war-time POW experience. She was the angel of light that “helped him back to the sunshine.”
They had three children, John, Ruth and Karen. They enjoyed living and traveling all over the northwest and eventually made their long-time home in Providence. Eventually they moved to southern Utah, Murray, and made their final home in Hyrum.
Her talents were many but chief among them was her cooking , which was second to none. Upon Jack’s death, Priel set about enjoying her family and blessing their lives. What a joy she was! All who knew her agreed she was an angel here on earth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sweetheart Jack, two brothers, Stan (Roxine) Covert and Keith (Elaine) Covert, and two sisters, Mary (Bud) Schultz and Bessie (Carl) Iwertz. She is survived by two brothers, Glenn (Elaine) Covert and Quentin (Barbara) Covert, her children John Henry Burton, Jr., Ruth (Tom) Weidner, and Karen (Paul) Miner, seven grand children, Ryan (Shauna), Maren (Duane), Angie (Rob), Teya (Justin), Jenny (Chris), Rochelle (Ashton), and Melody; and nine great-grandchildren, McKenna, Ashley, Bryleigh, Lauren, Evan, Paul, Claire, Matthew and Eli.
