Raija S. Thomas
Our beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Raija Sisko Töytäri Thomas passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2011 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Raija was born September 1, 1928 in Kotka, Finland to Vilho Töytäri and Aili Oinonen Töytäri. Raija grew up in Kotka and Turku, Finland. She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 12, 1949 in Turku, Finland. She later came to the United States and attended Brigham Young University. She met McKinley Thomas in Finland while he served as a missionary. They married on February 22, 1958 in the Cardston Alberta LDS Temple.
They raised their two daughters in Orem, Utah on Eastwood Drive which was a little bit of heaven on earth. They left wonderful neighbors and friends when they moved to Cache Valley in 1987 and built a home in North Logan. They were very sad to leave their “mansion” when they moved to Legacy House in 2004.
Raija was a devoted wife and mother. She was always concerned with each family member and was a loving and compassionate friend. She was the finest example of a mother and womanhood. Raija is survived by her husband, McKinley Thomas of Logan, UT; sister, Varpu Jokiranta of Turku, Finland; two daughters: Maria Lisa (Kirk) Tanner of Lindon, UT; Kristina (Steven) Glaittli of North Logan, UT; 7 grandchildren: Logan (Kristen) Tanner of Boston, MA; Jessica (Chris) Mitton of Pleasant Grove, UT; Elder Sean Tanner, Germany Berlin Mission; Katherine, Scott, Jacob, and Tyler Glaittli of North Logan, UT; one and a half great grandchildren: Olin Tanner and baby girl Mitton.
