Randy G Leishman, 69, passed away Tuesday December 19, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Randy was born to Lavell and Connie Leishman on December 12, 1954, in Logan, Utah. He was the third of seven children. He grew up and lived his entire life in Wellsville. He spent his childhood helping on the farm. One of his chores on the farm was getting up at 5 AM each morning to milk cows so there was warm milk for breakfast. He helped his grandfather bale, haul and stack hay that was put up for the animal’s winter feed.
Beginning at a young age, Randy loved to be outdoors. He roamed the hills around Wellsville scouring for treasures. This passion continued through his entire life. He had a vast collection of arrowheads and could often be found with his metal detector in hand. He was always excited to show off his finds and there was a story to go with each one.
As a young boy he also developed a love for coins, especially the shiny ones made of gold and silver. Visits from Brandy and the kids would bring a smile to his face, and he would break out the coin box. I think he showed us those same coins at least two dozen times but there was always a smile on his lips and a glint in his eye when he shared his treasure.
He met the love of his life, Janet Anderson, at Sky View High School. They were high school sweethearts and were married on May 12, 1976. They purchased a plot of land from his grandfather. He and Jan built their dream home and lived there happily for the remainder of their lives.
Randy and Janet were blessed with two children, Brandy and Kelly. Randy instilled a love for the outdoors into his children. Brandy has fond memories of family camping trips, shooting lessons, fishing, and horseback riding.
Randy was very particular. He worked hard to keep the house and yard looking just so. Everything had a place and was expected to be in that place. If it wasn’t he was not afraid to let you know.
Randy spent his career as a carpenter building homes around Cache Valley, until a back injury sidelined him. This unfortunate injury became a blessing in disguise when Janet suffered a series of medical emergencies that left her unable to care for herself. Since Randy was home, he was able to provide the care she needed day and night for 10 years until she passed away in 2011.
He had a soft spot for animals. He could spot a stray from a mile away, bring it home and make it a part of the family.
Randy lived life on his terms. He was stubborn and rough around the edges, but there was a soft spot inside him. He was resourceful and independent. Randy cared for himself and remained of sound mind until the day of his passing. He will be missed by his children, grandchildren, siblings and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Lavell and Connie; and his wife: Janet. He is survived by his siblings: Pam (Joe Dahl), Susan (Tom Jensen), Jeff (Lynn), Kevin (Margie), Kendall (Janey), and Brian Leishman; his children: Brandy (Lucus Bankhead) and Kelly (Melody) and; his grandchildren: Cannon Olsen, Presley Olsen, Kennadi Bankhead.
Even in death he will not leave his beloved Wellsville. Graveside services and internment will be Saturday, December 23, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the Wellsville City cemetery.
