LOGAN- Surrounded by his family, Raymond D. Hlavaty, 82, passed away on Sunday, January 5th after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born August 21, l931 in Buhl, Idaho to John Raymond Hlavaty and Ellen Coker. He spent his early life in Buhl, where he learned the value of hard work and where his love of the outdoors began. He graduated from high school in 1949 and excelled at baseball.
Because of his prowess as a left-handed pitcher, he came to Utah State on a baseball scholarship. He was also a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Pershing Rifle Team. He made a lot of friends during this time, but his best find was the black haired beauty Lou Ann Checketts. He married Lou Ann on May 24, 1954; their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.
He graduated with a ROTC Commission and served in the US Army. While baseball got him to college, the GI Bill got him through medical school, for which he was always grateful. He graduated from the U of U Medical School in 1961. During his residency he was Wyeth Fellow and Chief Resident at Primary Children’s Hospital.
Ray and Lou Ann moved their family to Logan where he practiced pediatrics at the Budge Clinic for 32 years. He was also Chief of Staff at Logan Regional Hospital and the President of the Cache Medical Society.
Ray enjoyed sports. He was a long time Aggie season ticket holder and was USU’s football team physician for the Japan trip in 1971. He also attended many Jazz games. He was an avid outdoorsman and was still able to hunt and fish up to the end. He and Lou Ann loved traveling the world over. His sense of humor kept those who knew him laughing.
He served others through the healing powers of medicine and sharing his common sense. He also faithfully served in many church callings. Family was centrally important to Ray, and his children and grandchildren knew that he loved them because he always cheered them on from the sidelines, stands or audience.
He is survived by LouAnn, his wife of 59 years. Together they had four children, Lauri Sorenson (Brad) of Logan, Scott (Michelle) of Logan, Cathy Hansen (Ned) of Hyde Park, and Todd (Linette) of Logan, 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
