Logan, Utah: Reed F. Vernon passed away Saturday August 26 on his 86th birthday, following a stroke. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
He was born in a log cabin in Wanship, Utah, August 26, 1920, the first son of Francis Oscar Vernon and Sadie Amelia Olsen. Reed was raised in Wanship and graduated from North Summit High. He then attended Utah State Agricultural College where he completed a two-year construction program. While attending school in Logan he met Elda Hansen, of Trenton. They were married on June 4, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. He was drafted into the Army in 1943. He was assigned to Company E of the Third Infantry Division, where he participated in the landing at Anzio Beach. After three months he was sent to Naples, Italy where for the next two years he used his carpentry skills at the Seventh Replacement Depot. He returned home in 1945. Reed worked as a carpenter and general contractor in Logan for many years. He was a skilled carpenter and many homes and businesses reflect his skill and attention to detail. He served for several years as the commander of the American Legion Logan Post and spent many years performing military honors at veterans’ graveside services.
Reed is survived by his five children; Rik (Katheryn) Smithfield, Janet (Bob) Rands, Spokane, WA, Clair (JoAnn) Tooele, Richard (Brenda) Kaysville and Chad (Tami) Providence; nineteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, two brothers; Louie (Myrl), Stewart (Connie), and one sister Merlene (Dick) Juluson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elda; his brother, Art; and two grandsons.
Reed was a quiet and unassuming man, a hard worker, and a good example to his children. He was a devoted, loving husband and was anxious to be reunited with his loving wife, Elda. He spent many hours entertaining his grandchildren in his woodworking shop. He was always patient and grateful for anything people did for him.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Terrace Grove for their loving care of their father.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 31, 1:00 P.M., at the Logan Third Ward, 250 North 400 West. There will be a viewing at the church prior to the service from 11:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery under the direction of Allen-Cranney Mortuary with military honors by the American Legion.
