Reed Murdock Broadbent

Logan, Utah: Reed Murdock Broadbent, born July 2, 1914 in Heber City, Utah died at home on May 30, 2006. Reed was the sixth of ten children born to Sylvester and Maggie Josephine Murdock Broadbent. His early years were spent in Heber City until the family moved to Salt Lake City. Summers were spent on the family ranch near Evanston, Wyoming. He married Eugenia (Jean) Stokes on the 19th of August, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of three sons; Lee, Steve and Neff. After Jean’s passing in June of 1988, Reed married Maude Bentley Broadbent.

Reed attended the University of Utah, where he received his bachelor, master and M.D. degrees. He was the Utah State bacteriologist from 1939 to 1943. After finishing medical school, he completed a surgical residency with the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Boston. While serving with the USPHS he was the Assistant Chief of Surgery in Staten Island, N.Y. and Chief of Surgery in Portland, Maine and Galveston, Texas.

The family moved to Logan in 1954 where Reed entered private practice as a surgeon and family physician until his retirement in 1980. He has been a member of the Cache Chamber of Commerce, Logan Kiwanis Club and served on the River Heights City Council. Always a strong supporter of scouting, Reed served for ten years on the executive committee, vice president in charge of finances and president of the Cache Valley Council, BSA. He is an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Silver Beaver.

Reed has been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Swiss-German Mission as a young man. He was a counselor in the Cache Stake Presidency, and then served as Stake President for thirteen years. He was president of the Ireland, Dublin Mission from 1980 to 1983, served as a counselor in the Logan Temple presidency from 1985 to 1988 and with Maude, served for two years as the director of the New York City Visitor’s Center then the Mesa Arizona Temple Visitor’s Center from 1992 to 1994.

Reed is survived by his wife, Maude Bentley Broadbent of River Heights; children, Lee S. (Deann) Broadbent, North Logan, Steven R. (Janet) Broadbent, Logan, G. Neff (Denese) Broadbent, South Jordan, Susan B. (Ralph) Tate, Salt Lake City, Elaine B. (Stanley) Tschaggeny, South Jordan and David K. (Kathy) Broadbent, Salt Lake City; sisters Cora B. McCarrey, Anchorage, Alaska and Jayne B. (Terry) Malan, Salt Lake City; 34 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Reed was preceded in death by wife Eugenia Stokes; brothers L. Verl, Benn E., Joseph Ray(J.R.), Cloyd S., Thomas K. and D. Clay; sister Elaine B. Curtis; daughter Julie B. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday June 3, 2006 at the Providence Stake Center, 800 South 600 East, River Heights, Utah. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Logan City cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund, 50 East North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150-1501
