Rhea Jo’an Lund Schenk was born in Preston, Idaho, to Leonard and Florence Hoopes Lund. She passed away peacefully on the evening of March 28, 2016, at The Legacy House, in Logan, Utah, from complications of a debilitating stroke. Rhea grew up on the farm and learned how to buck hay, milk cows, ride horses, and never missed the annual cattle drives. She was always proud of her Idaho farm girl roots.
After losing her mother at the age of 12, she, along with her beloved sisters, took over the household duties, including nurturing and tending to her younger siblings. She graduated from Preston High School and moved to Salt Lake City where she obtained an associate’s degree in Secretarial Sciences. While working in Salt Lake City, she met and married Lamond Collier, and they became the proud parents of four sons: Lamond Jr. (died in infancy), Clair, Daniel, and Ramond. They were later divorced, and Rhea moved back to Preston, Idaho, where she raised her boys on the farm with the help of her father and her younger siblings, now young adults.
While at a church activity, she met Lamont Schenk and they were later married in the Logan LDS Temple on December 29, 1969. Rhea and her boys moved to Nibley, and she then became an instant mom to four teenagers. With the addition of Bonnie, their family was complete!
In addition to being a very busy mother to eight, Rhea still found time to be involved in her church and community. She served in the local, county, and state PTA boards. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in ward and stake positions. Her favorite calling was ward organist. A very talented pianist and organist, Rhea served as the ward organist in every ward that she attended. Along with her husband, Mont, Rhea enjoyed working in the Logan LDS Temple and attended the temple weekly until her health would no longer permit her to continue.
Rhea was a member of the Sunflower Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She served in many local and county leadership positions within the organization and always looked forward to their monthly meetings and activities.
Rhea was an excellent seamstress, quilter, and chef. Each grandchild has been the recipient of a handmade quilt that was made with love by Grandma. She will be remembered for her chocolate cake, stew, and “Grandma’s Pickles.” Nobody made pickles like Grandma could!
Rhea is survived by her sisters Margaret, Kay, and Linda; brothers Dennis, Jerry, Knute, and Ira; children John, Jean, Clair and Laura, Daniel and Lenet, Ramond and Darlene, and Bonnie and Eldon; 16 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren, with another due in a few weeks. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, brother Charley, husband Lamont, sons Lamond Jr. and Michael, daughter Charlene, and grandson Jason.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 1, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the LDS church house: 360 W. 3200 S., Nibley, Utah. A viewing will be held Thursday, March 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary: 34 East Center Street Logan, Utah, and Friday from 12:30 to 1:30, at the church. Interment will be in the Providence City Cemetery. The family would like to give a special thanks to all the medical staff and facilities, with a special thanks to Access Hospice, who cared for our mother and grandmother the past few weeks.
In lieu of flowers, please spend time with your family and tell them often that you love them.
