Robert Burns Crookston Iii

January 4, 1944 — January 19, 2007

North Logan, Robert Burns Crookston III, 63, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan.19, 2007, due to complications from surgery at the Cache Valley Specialty Hospital.

He was born in Battle Mountain, Nevada on January 4, 1944, to Robert B. Crookston and Deon Quarnberg. He grew up in North Logan and has lived there most of his life, building his home on the Crookston family property. He completed 1st through 8th grade in the old North Logan School and graduated from South Cache High School, where he lettered in Football and Wrestling. He was awarded a football scholarship, but chose instead to follow his heart into the road construction profession.

He married his sweetheart, Janis Read on January 29, 1965 in Trenton, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They were blessed with two totally awesome daughters, Bobbie and Kelli.

Burns continued to follow his love of construction throughout his life, building highways in Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, and Idaho. Janis and the girls spent many happy summers in the family trailer following Burns to various construction sites. Burn's love affair with construction never ended. He worked for LeGrande Johnson Construction for 35 years and was presently employed as Road Superintendent of North Logan City where he has been employed since 1998. With his vast knowledge of heavy equipment he became a valued mentor to the next generation of operators and business owners. His expertise was invaluable to companies such as Parsons-Staker Construction, Wheeler Machinery, and others. It was said, “If it is yellow, he can run it!

Burns grew up around horses, raising and loving them. He raised many horses. One special horse, Blondie, was his favorite and the feeling was mutual. She would not let Janis walk along side of Burns across the pasture. The only woman she approved of was Burns’ granddaughter, Cortney.

Burns grandchildren were the light of his life. No grandfather could have loved his grandchildren more than Burns. He was proud of all their accomplishments and everything they did. He loved four-wheeling, hunting, fishing, football games, baseball games, movies, dinners, birthdays, traveling, teasing, and working with all of them.

Burns was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He loved serving as a home teacher.

Burns is survived by his wife, Janis; his daughters Bobbie Deon (Cory) Bowen, and Kelli Fredrickson (Ryan Smith); six grandchildren Robert Beau, Cortney Quinn, Dexter Lynn, Meg Deon, Riley B., and Alec Vernon. He is also survived by one sister and four brothers; Syndey Kay, Charles E. (Brenda), Glenn (Melody), Currie (Susan), and William (Nancy).
