Robert Gilbert Glass

July 30, 1922 — February 25, 2010

Logan, Utah: Robert Gilbert Glass, 87, passed peacefully from this world in Logan, Utah, on February 25, 2010, of complications of congestive heart failure.
Son of Nanna Della Fleming Glass (1886-1967) and David Gilbert Glass (1883-1947), he was born July 30, 1922, in a farmhouse in Castleford, Idaho, and he spent most of his youth living in Hood River and The Dalles, Oregon.
His love of flying led him to enlist in the Army Air Corps where he trained as a glider pilot and later proudly served his country as a radio operator and gunner on the B-24 “liberator” in the European theater during the last years of World War II. He successfully flew 32 missions as part of the 389th Bomb Group of the 2nd Air Division of the 8th Air Force of “Patton’s Army” and is fond of remembering that the famous actor Jimmy Stewart was Wing Commander of his Division.
After the war, he returned to complete his education in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, where he earned a Master’s degree, and to marry his OSU college sweetheart Helen Eileen Starkey. Helen was the love of his life and she is still so glad she accepted his invitation to dance at that OSU freshman mixer. She and Robert were married in Portland, Oregon on August 12, 1945. and were partners and best friends for almost 65 years.
In 1998 Helen and Robert moved to Logan, Utah, to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Helen currently lives at the Williamsburg Retirement Community and would love to hear from old friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his brother Neel (Pojoaque, NM) and he is survived by his brother George and his sister Flora May (Bradley) both of Seattle, WA as well as his children William David (Seyssinet, France), Robert Alan (Farmington, MN), and Bonnie Kay (Logan, UT), their spouses and six grandchildren.
Robert was a gifted story-teller, a kind and devoted husband and father, and he wished to be remembered as someone who tried to be “a good Christian man.” Indeed, you were, Dad, and we know that you have flown into the arms of your Father and now inhabit that “wild blue yonder” that you loved so much.
