Robert Mack McConkie, age 33, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, 24 August 2009, at his home in Logan, Utah, from a sudden illness. Robert was born on 23 July 1976 to Carl and Katherine McConkie in Vernal, Utah. He was the oldest of three boys and lived in Vernal as well as Dillon, Montana before moving to Cache Valley when he was 13 years old. Robert graduated from Sky View High School in 1994 and from Utah State University in 2006 with a degree in technical writing. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked for many years with people with disabilities and had a true talent for loving those with whom he worked. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and we all loved his laugh.
Robert had a kind, loving heart and loved to serve. His motto, “Service – there’s no higher purpose,” sums up his life. At family events, he could always be found taking his Uncle Nathan, who is disabled, for walks. He faithfully served in his community and was always available to help, even if he had to borrow his dad’s truck and trailer to do so! His phone rang at the oddest hours – people knew they could call on him. He will be sorely missed by his family but also by the myriad of friends he loved and helped through the years, and who loved and helped him in return.
Robert is survived by his parents, Carl and Kathy (Smithfield), his brother and sister-in-law, Luke and April (Layton), his brother Jake (Smithfield), and his three nieces, whom he dearly loved, Ariana, Caitlin, and Azkadellia (Layton). He is also survived by his grandparents, A.W. and Elaine Allred (Hyde Park) and Valina Merkley (Vernal), and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. His grandfather, Charles Mack McConkie, his step-grandfather, Roland Merkley, his uncle, Duane McConkie, his aunt, DeAnn McConkie, and his cousin, Michael J. Allred, preceded him in death.
Robert’s funeral will be held on Monday, 31 August 2009, at 11:00 a.m., in the Smithfield 19th Ward chapel (640 N. 200 E., Smithfield). Friends and family may call from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, 30 August 2009, at the Allen Mortuary (420 E. 1800 N., North Logan) and on Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Smithfield 19th Ward chapel. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the Allen Mortuary. Condolences and memories can be shared with the family at

In remembrance of Robert, let’s all “do something for someone else to make his or her life better. Find someone who is having a hard time, or is ill, or lonely, and do something for them.”
Robert, we love you. We’re proud of you. We miss you, but we’ll see you on the other side.
