Ronald Bergener

Ronald “Gus” Bergener, 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Logan home on Tuesday January 14, 2014.
Gus was born in Logan on February 11, 1933 as the third son to Harley and Zeta Bergener. Gus was raised in Logan and attended Logan Schools. He graduated from Logan High School in 1951. As a young man, Gus excelled in golf and other sports and was always present on the leader boards of the local junior and high school tournaments.
After high school, Gus was drafted into the United States Military where he served in Germany and Denmark. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1955 and returned to Logan to continue his education.
Gus was awarded a golf scholarship at Utah State in 1955 and earned two letters as the Aggies competed in the Skyline Conference. It was as a student at Utah State, where Gus met Donna Lou Kearl of Smithfield. The two began dating and were married on November 15, 1957 in Ogden, Utah.
Gus and Donna initially resided in Salt Lake City as Donna worked as a school teacher. In 1958, the couple moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where they would make their home for more than 33 years. Shortly after moving to Idaho Falls, Gus started his career with the Westinghouse Corporation as a production engineer at the Idaho Nuclear Energy Lab. He worked at Westinghouse for 33 years and retired in 1991.
While in Idaho Falls, Gus continued his lifelong passion for the game of golf. He was a scratch player and won the Idaho Falls City Championship in 1965 and the Club Championship at the Idaho Falls Country Club in 1966. Gus and Donna were active members of the Idaho Falls Country Club as well as the Logan Golf and Country Club.
It was always Gus and Donna’s desire to retire early and return to Logan. In 1995, those dreams came true as the couple purchased a home in Logan and moved back to Cache Valley. Gus loved the 23 years he spent in retirement and often socialized with many of his childhood friends.
After returning to Logan, Gus continued his love and support for Utah State University and its athletic teams. Gus was the consummate Aggie. He and Donna were season ticket holders for more than 50 years and attended various Aggie football and basketball games throughout the country. Gus and Donna were officers in the Big Blue Club and were also inducted into the Utah State University Old Main Society in 2000.
Gus was a wonderful father, husband, brother, and uncle. He was always a loyal and trusted friend. His sense of humor, compassion, and decency will be truly missed.
Gus is survived by Donna, his wife of 56 years; his son David of Los Altos, California; his sister Ann Lee (McKeehan) of Arroyo Grande, California; and his sister-in-law Elaine Bergener of Tooele. Gus was preceded in death by his parents Harley and Zeta as well as his older brothers Reid and Gordon.
A Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Logan City Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life reception at the Logan Golf and Country Club at 11:30AM immediately following the Cemetery ceremony.
