Ronald Eric Hedin, 77 passed away on Tuesday February 3, 2015 peacefully after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis surrrounded by his loving family. He was born October 1, 1937 to Earl and Lydia Hedin. He spent his childhood in Ogden Utah where he graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber College. While serving an LDS mission to the North Western States he began writing his future sweetheart Ellen Mathie. Upon completion of his mission, Ron and Ellen were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 4, 1960. They were blessed with five children.
Ron was a Store Manager for Kinney Shoes when he transferred his young family from Boise to Portland and then to Las Vegas. He then worked for Nevada Lath and Plaster before moving his family to Utah where he was employed by Schrieber Foods and later Autoliv and Maceys.
Ron was as faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many leadership positions and especially enjoyed serving with the youth. A highlight of his church service included working with the young men of the North Las Vegas 11th ward where he coached them in softball and basketball. He and Ellen especially enjoyed serving a mission to Nauvoo, IL. Upon their return they were privileged to serve in the Logan Temple for 6 years until his health became a factor.
Sports was a big part of Ron's life. He and Ellen both played softball in their early married life. Ron continued playing softball and perfected his signature pitching "hop" that he was well known for. He continued playing in leagues until the age of 55 when he played in the Senior Olympics in St. George. After he retired his cleats he could be found supporting his children and grandchildren in their many athletic endeavors. He and Ellen traveled near and far to cheer on their grandkids.
Fishing was a favorite pastime of Ron's. Every year the family's vacation was spent on the Madison River in Montana. He also enjoyed many deer hunting trips throughout the years with all the Hedin boys.
Ron had a passion for raising show pigeons and chickens and became an expert in his field. He could be found all over the northern part of Utah and Southern Idaho judging the poultry exhibits at several county fairs. He enjoyed being a mentor for any interested in raising pigeons.
Ron was an avid Aggie fan and was privileged to volunteer on "the chain crew" for every USU home game for 35 years. It was very difficult for him to give this up when his health started to decline.
Above all Ron enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was known for his witty sense of humor. We could sit around for hours listening to him tell stories and jokes.
Ron is survived by his wife Ellen Hedin and their children Mindy Jorgensen, Mitch (Shelly) Hedin, Marcy (Brad) Olsen, Michele (John) Sherman, Mark Hedin, 24 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, a sister Doreen Hardy and a brother Duane E. Hedin.
We would like to thank Dr. Michael J. Stones and his staff as well as the nurses and staff at Logan Regional Hospital for the loving care they gave our dad.
