HYRUM, UTAH: Hyrum City lost an American Hero on February 20, 2012. Ross Norvell Queen passed away peacefully at the Utah State VA Nursing Home in SlC.
Ross was born to Wallace D. and Dorothy Alice Livingood Queen, June 12, 1917, in Ness City, Kansas. The dust storms of the 1930's prompted a family move to Boise, Idaho where he graduated from Boise High. He attended Idaho State for one year before joining the Navy. Ross was a Pearl Harbor survivor as he was blown off the deck of the USS Shaw. He then swam underneath the burning oil until fellow sailors rescued him. Ross also served in the Marines and fought in the battle at Iwo Jima. Out of his unit of twenty-eight only two survived. Ross always said the reason he survived the war was because "The Lord had his hand on it!" After the war ended he stayed on for an additional two years as the Production Manager of the Navy News.
He married Patricia Knighton in Reno, Nevada on June 19, 1963. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and they were sealed in the Logan Temple on June 27, 1985. Ross loved motorcycles and cars and they enjoyed their time together touring many places. Ross and Pat also spent several years serving in leadership positions in the American Legion and in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Ross spent his professional career in the newspaper business and later as a Printing and Graphic Arts teacher at Boise High School and Idaho State University. After retiring he and Pat fell in love with Cache Valley and settled in Hyrum. Pat had a stroke in 1984 and Ross lovingly cared for her at home until she passed away in 2005.
Ross is survived by his sister, Dorothy Wood (Paul) of Spokane, Washington.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Hyrum City Cemetery with military honors. Funeral directors are Allen-Hall Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Cache American Legion Post #47, Hyrum, Ut.
