A devoted husband, a loving father, and a champion of the law, Roy H. Maughan Sr., passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday afternoon December 12, 2018. Roy was born in Logan, UT on September 26, 1930 and, although he loved his adopted home of Louisiana, he cherished his Western roots. Roy graduated from Utah State University where he played football. As a young man, he served a 2 1/2 year mission in the South American countries of Uruguay and Paraguay for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He later served in numerous other volunteer church assignments, including as a Bishop of a congregation. Compassionate service was a hallmark that defined his life. Following college, Roy served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict, working in the Counter Intelligence Corps, achieving the rank of Captain. Upon completing his military service, he attended The Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University where he obtained his Juris Doctorate. In 2010, Roy was honored by the Louisiana State Bar Association as a 50 year practitioner. As a younger man he enjoyed many hobbies, including water skiing, snow skiing, deep sea fishing and riding off road motorcycles with his family and friends. He particularly enjoyed elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains. In his later years, he came to enjoy the simple beauty of the mountains and the wonders of nature more than the hunt. Roy was a man of great faith, as well as a humble, kind and compassionate soul. His wife of forty three years, Iris, was his best friend, travel companion and deepest love. Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his greatest source of pride. He took immense pleasure when he had the opportunity to watch them do the simple things like participate in a dance recital or compete in sporting events, whether it be a football game, track meet or wrestling match. Roy will be sorely missed by many friends and associates, but particularly by his survivors who called him husband, Dad and Grandad. Roy is survived by his wife, Iris, eight children, Roy H. Maughan, Jr. and wife Cindy of Baton Rouge; Jennifer M. Robinson and husband John of Hattiesburg, MS; Deane M. Frazier and husband Scott of Baton Rouge; James L. Maughan and wife Jena of Baton Rouge; David D. Little and wife Michelle of Houston, TX; Traci L. Childers and husband Mike of Baton Rouge; Ann Little Fann of Baton Rouge and Donald W. Little and wife Katie of Shreveport. He is also survived by twenty one grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. Roy was preceded in death by his first wife Shirley G. Maughan; mother Vesta O. Michaelsen and her husband Leon; his father Robert L.G. Maughan and his wife Francis and one brother and two sisters.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2018 beginning at 10:00 AM at the Wellsville City Cemetery.
