Rob Roy Palmer (1925 - 2010)
Roy Palmer passed away on April 4, 2010, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Born in Logan, Utah, Roy was raised by his mother, Gladys DeWitt Palmer, after his father’s death in 1929. Raised with his brother DeWitt, and his sister Thais (now deceased), Roy attended Logan City Schools until entering the Navy. During his military service, he was stationed primarily in California and the Pacific, then returned to Logan to attend Utah State University where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.
After briefly working for Palmer Christiansen in Salt Lake City, Roy again returned to Logan in 1954 and joined the family business, A.H. Palmer & Sons Plumbing & Heating, one of Logan's oldest establishments. He became a partner and owner in 1955, and later brought in another family member as his partner, Val Palmer, who passed away last year. During their tenure, A.H. Palmer & Sons grew from a rural business into a prominent mechanical contracting firm, with projects that included Pepperidge Farms, Thiokol, Nucor Steel, and Utah State University. Roy worked at what was affectionately called “the shop” for over 46 years until he retired at age 75, in 2000.
In August of 1955, Roy married the love of his life, Sandra Marshall. Roy and Sandra have always loved to travel with family and their many great friends, and have seen much of the world in the years they have spent together.
In addition to being a loving husband and father, Roy was a man for all seasons. He loved music, especially classical, and had an uncanny ability to recognize the origins, the composer, and the history behind any opera, concerto, symphony, or movement, he heard. He read and appreciated all types of literature, and was very much a “gadget guru.” Roy was always the first in line for the latest technology, from the Walkman, the first DVD player, the Ipod, HDTV, and the latest computer models, just to name a few. His latest gadget was a Kindle.
Roy was a very talented craftsman, spending winters and summers building and fixing things in his own workshop at home. Although he always said he could fix anything but a broken heart, as a father of three daughters, he usually managed to fix those too. For all of us with broken hearts, we wish we knew his secret.
Roy is survived by his wife, Sandra, his three daughters, Robin Schroeder (Vern), of Troy, Michigan, Erin Johnson (Troy), of Logan, Utah, Noel Palmer Simpson (Todd), of Las Vegas, Nevada, and four grandchildren, Kate Pitcher (Lance), Ian Johnson, Paige Schroeder, and Jordan Schroeder. He witnessed the next generation of his family enter the world on August 14, 2009, with the birth of his great granddaughter, Addyson Pitcher. His brother and friend, DeWitt Palmer, still lives on his beloved farm in Millville, Utah.
