After supporting so many others on their missions, Mom and Dad are serving the mission together that they had to delay 30 years ago. LaVon passed away peacefully on December 27, 2014 in Logan at the age of 94. She was born October 21, 1920 in Davenport, Iowa where her father attended the Palmer School of Chiropractory. She was the oldest child of Parkin Kennan and Nettie VanNoy Hayes.
LaVon's parents eventually settled in Richmond, Utah when she was 8 years old. She graduated from North Cache High School where she met her love, Winn Peterson. Winn and LaVon were married August 5, 1939 in Farmington, Utah and were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on March 14, 1947. In 1941 they moved to Smithfield. Mom lived in that house for 69 years, including 9 years after Winn's death, before moving to Logan.
LaVon was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mom loved the church and the gospel. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.
She worked at Woolworth's for more than 20 years and the Smithfield Implement after that. She finally retired in 1996 at the age of 76. She enjoyed working and loved the people she worked with an they loved her.
Winn and LaVon gave generously to many worthy causes. Mom and Dad provided financial support to many descendants, family members and friends over the years as they served missions for the church. Mom's last two acts of charity were to make a donation to the Cache Valley Food Pantry and, during tithing settlement, she gave her bishop money to use for Christmas for a needy family in the ward.
Mom never forgot to send a card to any of her children or grandchildren for birthdays or Christmas. She attended christenings, baptisms, graduations and weddings, and always gave gifts whether she was able to attend or not. The remembrances were always much appreciated by her family members.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Charles Ray Hayes, Parkin Kennan Hayes and John VanNoy Hayes, her sister Betty Jean Coltrin, her mother and father, her husband Winn, a son David John Peterson and a granddaughter Stephenia Sanchez. She is survived by daughter ShanaDeen (Milt) Bodily, daughter Ruth Kayleen (Fernando) Sanchez, son Jerald Winn (Donna) Peterson and daughter RoseMary (Dennis) Anderson, 26 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Evergreen Hospice and Dr. Deserae Goble for the kind and tender care given to LaVon. They went out of their way to take care of mother.
