Ruth Hendry Maughan passed from this life on Sunday, December 17, 2006, at her home in Wellsville, Utah. Ruth was born on November 28, 1924 in Wellsville to John J and Mary Allen Hendry. She married Clarke Poppleton Maughan on November 12,1947 in the Logan LDS Temple.
She attended Floradell Elementary School, Wellsville Junior High and graduated from South Cache High School. She attended Utah State University, majoring in Business. During World War II, she worked at the Ogden Defense Depot and after the War was employed by the Cache County School Board as a secretary until the birth of her first child. After her children were in school, she returned to work at Clearfield Cheese in Wellsville and ended her work career at First Security/Wells Fargo Bank in Hyrum.
Ruth lived in Wellsville her entire life, except for the one year she spent on a Mission with her husband in Fresno, California. She was active in civic affairs, the Junior Literary Club, the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and contributed significantly to writing Windows of Wellsville, a compilation of Wellsville history and biographies of its early residents. She was recognized by the City of Wellsville as the Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Queen of 1856, and Sweetheart Couple for the Founder's Day celebrations. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints and served throughout her life in the Relief Society, Primary and Young Women organizations. She also served as a temple worker in the Logan LDS Temple. Since she was 12 years old, she accompanied hundreds of musical performances and held the calling of Ward Organist for 60 years. She accompanied the Wellsville Ladies' Quartet for 40 years and also accompanied other quartets and individuals. If anyone ever needed an accompanist, Ruth was asked and was willing to serve and share her talents. She was a gifted seamstress, quilter, genealogist and enjoyed working in her flowers. She was avid sports fan and loved to watch her husband, children and grandchildren as they participated in sports.
Ruth is survived by her husband Clarke, Wellsville, and five children: Marilyn (Joe) Smith, Phoenix, Arizona; Marci (Mark) Clements, Gainesville, Georgia; Michelle Lyle, Wellsville; Allan (Dixie) Maughan, Ivins, Utah; and Brian (Cheri') Maughan, Wellsville. She is also survived by a niece and nephew, Janice (Kelly) Reese, Benson, and Glade (Suzette) Smith, Wellsville. She has 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Clarke, a granddaughter, Ashton Maughan, her brother, Leon Hendry, and her sister, Helen Smith.
A viewing will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E Center, Logan, Utah, on Wednesday, December 20,2006, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1 :00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21,2006, at the Wellsville Stake Center, 30 S Center Street, Wellsville. A viewing will precede the service at the Wellsville Stake Center from 11:30-12:30. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wellsville Tabernacle Foundation in care of Clarke Maughan, 195 E Main, Wellsville UT 84339.
