Ruth Johnson Rice

LOGAN, UTAH: Ruth Johnson Rice, 93, died Sunday, November 27th, 2011 in Logan. Mom was born November 22, 1918 in Logan, a daughter of Sydney A. and Ida Hansen Johnson.
She graduated from USU in 1940. That same year she married James N. Randall and moved to Ogden. Together they had three children.
While in Ogden she was a member of many service organizations, including Aglaia, and Charaya.
She began her professional career in Ogden and Salt Lake City as a teacher on the education channels KWCS and KUED, pioneering educational in-school television programs. She founded the program series “Kaleidoscope of Children’s Literature.”
In 1969 she married Moyle Q. Rice of Logan, and accepted a contract to teach at USU. She taught for 16 years as a professor and director of the Anne Carroll Moore Library and Media Center at the Edith Bowen Lab School on the USU campus. At this time she also created and produced the radio program “Into a Child’s Mind” for KUSU FM. Her wonderful storytelling was heard throughout Cache Valley.
Mom was a talented Potter. After retiring from teaching she made many beautiful pottery pieces that are still enjoyed by family and friends. She was a member of Alliance for the Varied Arts, and Allied Arts. She was always a gracious host and wonderful cook. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her lovely home, no one ever left without being offered something to eat or drink.
Surviving are her daughters, Christine (Julio) Acevedo, New York City; Jan Logan, Salt Lake City; Becky (Dolph) Woods, Ogden; one step-daughter, Louise Thomas, Logan; six grandchildren; Michael (Shelly) Logan; Rachel (Phil) Woods; Jenny (Titus) Woods; Andrea (Craig) Acevedo; Diana Duncan; Jonathan (Stephanie) Thomas; and four great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Moyle, a stepson, a son-in-law, and a granddaughter.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the kind and caring staff of Legacy House Logan, and Access Hospice.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday December 1st 11a.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan.
Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday November 30th from 6 to 8p.m. and Thursday 9:30 to 10:30.
