Obituary for Sarah Lizzie Seamons Daines
Sarah Lizzie Seamons Daines, 99, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at her home in Salt Lake City.
Sarah was born Dec. 1, 1912, in Hyde Park, Utah, to John Robert and Hannah Lund Seamons. She married Spencer Hansen Daines December 6, 1933, in the Logan Temple, and they were married for 67 years before his passing on Dec. 19, 2000.
Sarah celebrated her 99th birthday in Salt Lake City surrounded by nearly 100 of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In all, she counted 37 grandchildren and 80 great-grandchildren – each one her pride and joy.
Sarah spent her early years in Battle Creek and Bancroft, Idaho, where her father farmed before returning to Hyde Park in 1924. Sarah often recalled fond memories growing up with her nine brothers and sisters, of which she was the last survivor.
Sarah made the most of her 99 years, living a full life dedicated to the service of others – her family, her church and her many friends at home and abroad.
She served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as teacher, Primary President, ward Relief Society President, in the stake Relief Society presidency and as an ordinance worker in several LDS temples.
She was active in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, was an officer in USU Faculty League and president of the USU Engineers Wives.
In 1967, Sarah traveled with Spencer, an agricultural engineer at Utah State University for 33 years, to LaPaz, Bolivia, on his two-year work assignment with the U.S. Agency for International Development. She then accompanied him on work assignments in Teheran, Iran, and Nairobi, Kenya.
In 1979, Spencer and Sarah accepted an LDS welfare mission call to Guatemala. LDS Temple missions followed in Bern, Switzerland; Quetzaltenango, Guatemala; Lima, Peru; Buenos Aires, Argentine; and Santiago, Chile. In all, they lived and traveled overseas for more than 14 years.
Sarah loved to travel, and visited nearly every country in the world. She enjoyed caring for her roses and vegetable gardens, and she could often be found baking or preparing meals for her visiting grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“My greatest love is my family – to be a mother,” said Sarah. She and Spencer reared seven children: Maureen (Robert, deceased) Hodgen, Bountiful, Utah; Deanna (David) Winn, Mountain View, Wyo.; Spencer (Sheila) Daines, South Jordan, Utah; Ron (Robyn) Daines, Logan, Utah; Carol (Duane) Quistberg, Herriman, Utah; and Kathy (Russell) Parker, San Diego, California. Sarah’s son Richard passed away in 1993. His wife Laura Daines lives in Centerville, Utah.
