Dr. Scott Paul Tripp

October 20, 1953 — January 3, 2024

Richmond, Utah

With heavy hearts we are sad to announce, after 70 short years, the passing of Dr. Scott Paul Tripp on January 3, 2024. Scott was a beloved husband to one of Gods lovely daughters as well as father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor to all.

Scott was born October 20, 1953, at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only son of Boyd B Tripp and Karla Lavore Paul.  He was adoringly sandwiched between his sisters. Scott was always studious.  His younger years in Granger, Utah, included chess club, earning his Eagle Scout at the early age of 13, and playing in the streams and fields behind their home.  He was always focused on his schoolwork and enjoyed taking a briefcase to middle school, complete with a plastic pocket protector and glasses.

After finishing eighth grade his father received a transfer to San Francisco, California. This introduced a fresh style, his California Dreamin’ teenage years complete with large bell bottoms, purple paisley shirts and a newfound love for music. He spent time with his buddies, swam in the family swimming pool in Campbell, a suburb of San Jose, drove his dune buggy, ran high hurdles and was the center in basketball for Del Mar High School.  Upon graduation the family immediately moved to the homestead farm in Richmond, Utah.

The family would help grandpa Ven on weekends, especially when it was hay hauling time. He spent many summers assisting and storing his mind with useful knowledge. Though he felt lonely, the beauty and majesty of the farm grew stronger within him every year. This instilled the duties of hard work, patience, and persistence in Scott.  Leading Scott to fulfil a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Manitoba Minnesota.

Scott always knew he wanted to practice medicine.  The thoughts of not being able to be outside and move around steered him into veterinarian science. He attended Utah State University and then continued to Colorado State University earning his Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine in 1982.

Scott met Judy in their summer of love in 1976. They were matched together, purposely by Scott, for a young adult dance festival. Throughout the practices love built. They performed a dance to the song “Picky Picky” after which he presented her with a single rose. A few days later Scott came to her home with a beautiful flower arrangement and asked her on a date. Five days later they were engaged. On September 10, 1976, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple.

Dr. Tripp’s first employment was at Bear Lake Animal Hospital, then Bridgerland-Cache Animal Hospital, until he realized a dream of opening his own practice on the family farm. This was accompanied by converting the original granary into Valley Vet Services with Dr. Sidney Hansen. Dr. Tripp was a sought-after Veterinarian and practiced his talents on many animals larger and small. Later in his career he left everyday practice and focused specifically on bovine medicine which included research and consulting.  His final years were with Amelicor (DHI Provo) using his brilliant mind to help dairies succeed, never ceasing until two days prior to his death.

Scott was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served humbly in and out of the church throughout his life honoring the call to “succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees” (D&C 81:5) to all that came under his care.  He accepted this responsibility with thanksgiving. He embodied the Scout Oath daily, serving God and Country as well as heeded the motto to “be prepared.”  A goal fulfilled was the installation of a tributary flagpole, honoring all ancestral and local Veterans, atop a wildflower covered hill on Tripp Family Farm on the hills of Richmond.  He cherished and appreciated his noble heritage for the sacrifices they made.

Scott worked more than a person can imagine possessing strength, fortitude, and courage. Waking early, you would find him, tending to the animals, on his computer, counseling others, researching new and innovative cattle practices, in the fields or on the tractor. There was no stopping what he set his mind to accomplish.  In his later years, his joke of the day was always a hit. Scott fought to the very end. His body unfortunately succumbed to a 10-year battle with an exceedingly rare cancer, olfactory neuroblastoma.

Scott is survived by the family he treasured and lovingly provided for.  His loving wife Judy Smith, children Rachel Godfrey (Shawn), Richmond, UT; Melissa Stevenson (Phillip), Twin Falls, ID; Adam Tripp (Mark), Logan, UT; Joseph Tripp (Jessi), Richmond, UT; adored grandchildren Aidyn Shawn Godfrey, Alexander John Stevenson, Kiera Rashaya Godfrey, Emma Ruth Stevenson, Carter Scott Stevenson, Simon Phillip Stevenson, Hannah Joy Stevenson, and Theodore “Teddy” William Tripp.

In addition are his siblings Carolan Hunter (Brent), Bennington, ID; Janet Kanongataá (David), Camarillo, CA; Margaret Bowden (Vernal), Swan Lake, ID; brother-in-law Martin Little; and Judy’s siblings LaVor Smith (Karen), Caldwell, ID; Glade Smith (Debra), Smithfield, UT; Gerald Smith (Judy Ann), Lewiston, UT; Dee Smith (Tom Norris), Bow, WA; Steven Smith (Kim), Pleasant Grove, UT.
