Scott Kingston Schwab
Providence - Scott Kingston Schwab, 69, of Providence passed away Sunday, March 25, 2007, at Logan Regional Hospital of complications from respiratory failure. He endured with grace and dignity the physical challenges that his body suffered.
He was born January 9, 1938, at Afton, Wyoming to Herbert and Hermoine Kingston Schwab.
He spent his early years in Afton, and graduated from Star Valley High School as student-body president in 1956. He served an LDS mission to San Antonio, Texas from 1958 to 1961. Following his mission, he emolled at Utah State University, where he received a RA. degree in Music Education.
Scott married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jo Merritt, in the Logan LDS Temple on June 30, 1961. Dad loved mom dearly and always treated her with the utmost kindness and respect.
He was a long-time music educator, teaching band, choir, and orchestra at high schools in Ogden, Utah; Cokeville, Wyoming; and Star Valley, Wyoming. During his tenure as a music teacher, he served as president of the Wyoming Music Educator's Association and as also as president of the Wyoming String Teacher's Association. In 1991, he received the Distinguished String Music Education Award from the National String Teacher's Association. Dad's groups performed at many music festivals and competitions, and none ofhis groups ever received less than a superior rating at these events. He helped initiate the Star Valley Choral Society in 1977, and was the impetus behind the Society's performance of Handel's Messiah each Christmas Season, a tradition that continues today. These performances included the high school orchestra, joined by community musicians and vocalists.
Scott was a skilled carpenter, craftsman, and woodworker, and spent many carefree hours in his woodshop creating unique handcrafted items, many of which were given as gifts to friends and acquaintances. He also gave the gifts of friendship, kindness and love to all with whom he came in contact.
He held numerous church callings, and served faithfully as Bishop of the Cokeville, Wyoming Ward. He also served as a High Councilor in the Star Valley, Wyoming Stake, and in many other capacities.
Later in life, he furthered his education by obtaining a Master's Degree in Instructional Technology from Utah State University, where he continued as a faculty member from 1988 to 1995. He then transferred to employment opportunities at the Hanford Nuclear Site in Richland, Wa.~hineton; Marketstar Technologies in Ogden, Utah; and as an instructor at Hill U.S. Air Force base. Following retirement, dad and mom settled in Providence, Utah.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Jo, and by five loving children, Carol Ann Larsen of Louisville, Kentucky; Sandra Kay Walker of West Jordan, Utah; Orrin Merritt Schwab of Providence, Utah; Tracy Merritt Schwab of Washington, DC; and Ryan Merritt Schwab of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert A. Schwab and Hermoine Kingston Schwab; grandson Andrew Allred Schwab; older brothers Herbert, Martin, Carl, Josh, Art and Hyrum. Schwab; older sisters Pauline (Stephan) and Francis (Heiner); and step-brothers Mel, Fred and Kay Whitney.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and medical staff at Logan Regional Hospital for their kind and compassionate care both to Scott and his family during this difficult time.
He will be greatly missed by his wife and family, and all who knew and loved him. Though our hearts are aching, they are even now being comforted. The legacy of his music, kindness and love will go on forever, as the flames lighted by his life's candle will continue to burn brightly.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am in the Providence 12th Ward Chapel, 300 South Main. There will be a viewing Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary and at the church on Weds from 9-9:45 am.
