Sherida Pitcher (age 61), a life-long resident of Smithfield, passed away on March 6, 2019 from metastatic breast cancer. She was born on August 4, 1957 to Orvid and Marva (Godfrey) Pitcher. She was raised and spent her life in service to the citizens of Smithfield and surrounding areas. For many years she was known by a nickname “Leo”.
Sherida was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in multiple capacities in the Primary, the Young Women’s program and in the Relief Society. Perhaps her favorite area of service, however, was the Cub Scouts. She was blessed with a remarkable sense of humor and artistic talent, so in each of her church callings she would put in much time providing handouts, posters, bookmarks, and related items to emphasize what she was teaching. Many friends in the community including Utah State University recognized her artistic talent and had her do artwork for numerous projects.
She was also exceptional with photography. She spent many hours reproducing and restoring old photographs for those doing family history research. Additionally, she served on the Smithfield City Historical Committee and completed the photographic reproductions of the early Smithfield pioneers and buildings for the historical book, “Smithfield…As a City on a Hill”.
Sherida was also a master gardener. For years (even after she knew she had cancer), she meticulously maintained a yard that she hoped would rival the world-famous Butchart Gardens. She built many boxes for raised vegetable beds. Her planted vegetables would always yield much more than the family could use. She would often give the excess to neighbors and friends. When she lost ability to be actively involved, she directed from her wheel chair as to what her sisters and family needed to do. We expect she will continue to direct this activity in the future, as she wanted it done her way.
Although she never married, she was a mother figure to all of her siblings, nieces, nephews, and their children. She was always involved in their activities, and showed interest and great love for all. She was enthusiastic about sports (particularly football) and loved the Utah Jazz and the Utah State University Aggies. She was an avid fan and attended as many games as possible with a group of her friends.
Sherida always maintained a positive “thumbs-up” outlook and was gracious right up to her death. As part of her “last wishes” she wanted to extend a sincere thank you to all of her medical friends at the Cancer Center, hospice caregivers, and loving friends who have spent so much time with her.
Those who remain here to remember her good life are: Father, Orvid Pitcher (the late Marva Godfrey Pitcher), brothers Michael (late Nancy Lance) Pitcher and Kory (Jen) Pitcher. Sisters are: Alyce (the late Paul) Bosch, Christy (Jim) Benedict, Alayna (Owen) Weston, Kendi Pitcher (Jeff Lang) and Clara Galeano. Additionally, there are many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and numerous friends who will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marva Godfrey Pitcher; sister-in-law, Nancy Lance Pitcher; Brother-in-law, Paul V. Bosch; and a young nephew, Addison Jones.
