Shirley Darley

Surrounded by her family, Shirley Baldwin Darley, 86, of Wellsville, Utah, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2012, at Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center due to illnesses incident to age. Shirley was born in Wellsville, Utah, on October 9, 1925. She was the second of three children born to William P. and Alda A. Baldwin.
Shirley’s early years were spent helping with housework, gardening, chores, gathering wood and picnicking at Black Smith Fork Canyon, and swimming at Wellsville Dam. She met her sweetheart, Lynn, at a dance in Wellsville.
Shirley and Lynn were married in the Logan LDS Temple on March 3, 1943. They bought a home in Wellsville where Lynn farmed and worked for the Morning Milk Company. Shirley caught the train in front of their house to go to South Cache to finish her senior year. Lynn and Shirley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 3, 1993. Lynn passed away on January 19, 1997.
Shirley was a full-time wife and homemaker, until her children were raised. She later cooked hot lunch at the Wellsville Elementary School for 13 years. She was an active member of the LDS church, serving in various callings. For many years, she was the Junior Sunday School Coordinator and a member of the ward choir. She especially enjoyed working on the Old Folks Committee and on the Quilting Committee. She was a visiting teacher for over 50 years.
Shirley was a member of the Wellsville Literary Club and Daughters of the Utah Pioneer’s. Shirley enjoyed riding with her friends on the bus to Wendover and associating with her new friends at Terrace Grove.
Shirley is survived by four of her five daughters: Marilynn (George) Platt, Pocatello; Pauline (Gary) Wilson, Plain City; Yvonne (LaMont) Jessop, Wellsville; Janice Darley, Wellsville; a sister, Coy Eliason, Logan; sisters-in-law, Marlene Baldwin, Smithfield; Shirlee S. and Virginia Darley, Wellsville; brother-in-law, Reed Darley, Wellsville; and special niece, Sharon Leishman, Wellsville. Shirley’s posterity includes 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Bart Baldwin; her daughter, Lynette Darley; and her grandson, Michael Shuck.

Funeral services will begin at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at the Wellsville Stake Center on Center and Main. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary on 34 East Center Street. There will be an additional viewing on the morning of the funeral services from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Wellsville Stake Center. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery.
