Shirley Marie Brown Mitton, age 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, and neighbor. She had an unconditional love for her family, especially her husband Don. She has waited almost 4 long years to reunite with him.
Shirley was born October 31,1929 in Hyrum, Utah, to Vernon William and Louisa Oldham Brown. She was the youngest of four children: Ray, Ruth and Joyce. Shirley grew up in Hyrum where she attended South Cache High School and later married her high school sweetheart, Don Edwin Mitton from Mt. Sterling, UT. They were married December 12, 1946, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Don and Shirley enjoyed 74 years of marriage together.
Shirley was a loving mother to her five children and their spouses; Shirleen (Dan) Byington, Elko Nevada; Becky (Chris) Poulton, Bothwell Utah; Donnie (Cindy)Mitton (both deceased); Kelly Mitton, Carlin Nevada and Lisa (Marcell) Niederhauser, Mendon Utah. She has 17 grandchildren, 47 great children, and 10 great great grandchildren who all loved and adored their Grandma Shirley.
Don and Shirley lived in Twin Falls ID, for 22 years. At this time, they began their lifelong journey together. All five of their children were born in Twin Falls. Shirley enjoyed her role in the family, staying home to raise their children. Also, during this time, they began welcoming their first few grandchildren into the family. They later moved to West Valley City, Utah. Where they spent 13 years watching their family continue to grow with more grandchildren. Concluding their time in West Valley, they decided to build a home in Mt Sterling, Utah. In their lovely home, they enjoyed 36 years of retirement together prior to Don passing away.
Don and Shirley always prioritized time with their children and grandchildren. Shirley enjoyed tying quilts, giving homemade cookies for each holiday, cooking her famous Sunday chicken dinner, and her daily lunch date with Don at Wendy’s. For many years, Shirley and her sister Joyce, enjoyed their Wednesday weekly tradition of attending the temple and going to lunch. Don and Shirley also enjoyed many trips in their motorhome with Dons brothers and their wives. They were able to spend quality time together traveling south and escaping the cold winters.
Shirley has always been active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she served in many callings. She loved to visit other sisters and always loved the sisters that visited her. She was always very active in her children and grandchildren’s lives attending their baptisms, baby blessings, ball games and any activity the grandchildren were involved in. Her family was her passion.
