A. Spencer Raymond

Ace Spencer Raymond, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend, of Logan, Utah, passed away at his home on Friday, February 23, 2024.  Born on October 9, 1936, he was the eldest of the six children of Ace Scott Raymond and Arvilla Watts Raymond. Spence had a great childhood roaming the areas around the Logan LDS Temple where his three childhood family homes were located and enjoyed a close relationship with his Watts aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from Logan High School in the class of 1954. He worked as a construction laborer while in high school and as a college student. After high school, Spence attended Utah State University and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. His education and spiritual growth continued as he served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Australian mission. Spence loved to tell his children and grandchildren how it took him thirty days aboard a freighter to get to his mission field, including a short stop at the Olympic Games in Melbourne. After his mission service he returned to USU and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and a commission in the Army ROTC. Upon graduation, Spence left for duty at the Army Transportation School located at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

During the summer prior to Spence’s senior year at USU, a mutual friend introduced Spence to Melanie Poole. In Spence’s words, “we were a threesome from then on.” Spence asked for Melanie’s hand in marriage and they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on June 5, 1962. Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to Williamsburg, Virginia where Lt. Raymond served as a T.A.C. officer and instructor at the base school.

Following his Army service, Spence and Melanie returned home to Logan where Spence became owner and president of the family business, Raymond Construction Company, and was a general contractor for the next forty years. During his career, Raymond Construction was the general contractor for numerous commercial buildings throughout northern Utah and southern Idaho, including Logan Regional Hospital, notable projects at Utah State University including the Stan Laub Indoor Training Facility, the Pepperidge Farm facility and many LDS Church projects.

Church service was always a priority throughout Spence’s life and his church callings included being a counselor in a branch presidency and two bishoprics, high councilor in a USU stake and Young Men’s president.  Most recently, Spence and Melanie served as missionaries at the St. George Utah Temple Visitors Center and Historic Sites Mission.

Spence was a Big Blue Club board member, a member of the USU College of Engineering Advisory Board, a member of the Old Main Society and an original member of the USU Athletic Department’s Quarterback Club. Spence was the President of the Logan Kiwanis Club and a member of the Area Advisory Board of Directors for Zions First National Bank.

Spence loved supporting his children and grandchildren in their academic and athletic endeavors. He enjoyed skiing, bowling, building model airplanes, basketball and golf.  He was a longtime member of the Logan Golf & Country Club. Spence earned his private pilot’s license and loved to fly a Cessna. He attended nearly all USU home football and basketball games.

Spence and Melanie are the parents of seven sons and one daughter: Alan (April) Raymond, Gordon (Traci) Raymond, Douglas (Jeanie) Raymond, Michele Raymond Redden, Greg (Colette) Raymond, Ace Spencer Raymond, Jr., Jeremy (Chelsey) Raymond and Tyler (Cameron) Raymond. They are the grandparents to 29 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Spence’s siblings are Susan Steinagel, Dr. J. Scott Raymond, Patricia Jensen and Mary Savage. Spence is preceded in death by his son Ace Spencer Raymond, Jr., great-granddaughter Olivia Raymond Ricks, his sister Jill Gihring and his parents.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, February 28^th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary. A day-of-service viewing will be held on Thursday, February 29^th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lundstrom Park 2^nd Ward building located at 1260 North 1600 East with funeral services beginning at 12:00 p.m. Funeral services will be live streamed and can be viewed online at www.allenmortuaries.com.
