Stanley Earl Tolman passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010. Throughout his life and during his year-long battle with cancer, Stan always kept a positive attitude, choosing to focus on his many blessings. He died at home surrounded by members of his family.
Stan was born Aug. 31, 1950, in Payson, Utah, to James Russell and Harriet Larue Tolman, the third of seven children. He met Lila Black while attending Utah State University. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints soon after he returned from his mission to the Philippines. They were blessed with four sons, and one of Stan's greatest joys was being a father.
Stan loved the outdoors - camping, hiking, biking and driving through the back country - sharing the beauties of nature with his family at every opportunity. Stan could build, repair, install or assemble anything. We will miss being able to ask for his advice and learn from his wisdom and experience. He had a love of learning and earned bachelors and masters degrees in civil engineering from Utah State University. In 1986, Stan moved his family to Maryland where he worked for the National Park Service for nearly 25 years.
Stan was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and over the years served in many capacities. He particularly enjoyed the time he spent as a nursery leader and as an ordinance worker at the Washington D.C. Temple. In addition, he was a devoted scout leader during the years his sons were involved in scouting.
Stan is survived by Lila Black Tolman, his loving wife of 35 years; his four sons, Thomas (Erin), New York, Matthew (Michelle), Herriman, Utah, Michael (Chantelle), Lehi, Utah, and Benjamin (Jana), Washington D.C. He is also survived by four granddaughters and three grandsons who are going to miss having their grandpa to play with. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m., and the funeral at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.Å@
