RICHMOND, UTAH - Stephen Fay Hawkes, 71, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2009, from complications of a brain tumor.
At the time of his death Steve was surrounded by his loving family and wife at his home in Richmond, Utah.
Steve was born September 29, 1937, in Logan, Utah to Agnes Marie Mortensen and Horatio Fay Hawkes.
Steve attended local schools and graduated from Logan High in 1955. He served in the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1960.
Steve married Ann Marie Beyeler on June 3, 1966, in Cokeville, Wyoming. Ann was a widow with 2 small children, LuAnn and Dwight. Steve was thrilled to become a father. Later, they were sealed as a family in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they had 2 more children, Curtis and Mary. Steve and Ann were later divorced.
On June 12, 1981, Steve married Jennette J. Apedaile in the Logan Temple. Jennette was the loving mother of 6 children. Steve, being the oldest of 10, was now the father of 10. He had an incredible capacity to love and accept them all as his own. Steve was a loving and patient father who always put his family first.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman who loved horses and riding his 4-wheeler. He spent lots of time in the back country with his close friends, brothers, and sons, teaching his boys to hunt, fish, ride horses and enjoy his love of the outdoors. He was a member of SASS and Hunter Safety. Steve became a great gun slinger. Cowboy -Shoot competitions became a big part of his life and brought him great enjoyment.
Steve was a talented craftsman, painting homes and hanging drywall. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Smithfield, Utah. He retired after 31 years.
After Steve’s retirement his days became quickly filled with all the activities of a full -time Grandpa.
He was a kind and loving husband, father, and friend. Steve was a great neighbor who always provided assistance wherever needed. He had a reputation of being a factitious handyman, always doing his best from start to finish.
Steve was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and fulfilled many church callings throughout his life. Over the last two summers Steve and Jennette served a mission for the LDS church at the Heber Valley Camp. They enjoyed their time together there and made many lifelong friends.
Steve is survived by his wife, Jennette J. Hawkes of Richmond, UT, and their children who are LuAnn (Doug) Rickson of Smithfield, UT; Jaunaree (Mike) Mills of Towaoc, CO; Dwight Beyeler of Logan, UT; John (Chris) Apedaile of Richmond, UT; Minonette (Bryan) Dayton of Richmond, UT; Lenonnie (Grayson) DuBose of Smithfield, UT; Quintin (Heidi) Apedaile of Hamilton, MT; Curtis Hawkes of Richmond, UT; Jay (Trina) Apedaile of Mendon, UT; Mary Elizabeth Poppleton of Lewiston, UT. Steve is the proud Grandfather of 27 Grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings; Susan (Reed) Fullmer, (Ray) Fehlman, Diane (Linden) Peterson, Randy (Janet) Hawkes, Carmen Roskelley, Becky (Mike) Williams, Shelley Jeanne Hawkes, Nancy (Gary) Deimer, Brett (Sherri) Hawkes. Steve was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister Gloria Fehlman.
Funeral Services will be held at noon on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at the Richmond City Creek Church located at 150 South 100 East in Richmond, UT. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at the same location. Interment will be in the Richmond City Cemetery with military honors performed by the Richmond American Legion. The family would like to thank all those who provided such loving care for Steve during his brief illness. We will all miss him dearly, but know that he is now with his many loved ones that have long been awaiting his joyous return.
