Sterling Lyle Burt

July 23, 1929 — February 23, 2014

LOGAN, UTAH: Sterling Lyle Burt was born July 23, 1929, in Clarkson, Utah, to Joseph John and Daisy Buttars Burt.  The last of 7 children, he held a soft spot in the hearts of his siblings for all his 84 years.  Lyle attended North Cache High and then worked in several places, including his parents’ business, Burt’s Café in Providence, until he met Maurine Turner.  The cute girl in the ticket booth at the Roxy captured his heart for the following 65 years.

Lyle and Maurine married in Logan, September 14, 1950, and were sealed in the Los Angeles LDS temple March 22, 1969.  In 1951 he joined the Army and went to Camp Rucker, Alabama.  After the birth of their first daughter, they stayed in Alabama for the duration of his service.  They made wonderful friends, many of whom have stayed in contact. Lyle served in the Military Police as an investigator.  His GI benefits then enabled him to return to Logan and complete a BS in business management and economics. After a few years in retail at Penney’s, he went to work in the space industry at North American Aviation in Southern California.  Moves to Waco, Sacramento, Las Cruces,  Houston and Huntsville added friends and excitement  to the next decades until his retirement in 1991.

Three daughters and a son were born to Lyle and Maurine before they left Logan, and the fifth in Las Cruces. Lyle was a fun and involved dad and a devoted husband.  He was a great role model for his sons, both in his work and his example as a husband.  He grew in his faith and loved his service in the LDS church.  He was bishop in Fullerton, California, and that calling brought him great joy.  He and Maurine served a mission in Hong Kong from 1991 to 1993.

After 15 years in St. George, they returned to Logan.  Lyle died there on Sunday morning of complications from a long battle with cancer.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Maurine; his 5 children Jayne (Greg) Johnson, Julie (Jeff) West, Patrick Lyle (Doree) Burt, and Timothy John Burt; and his siblings, Cleo B. Call, Velma (Dave) Wells,  and John A. (Merle) Burt.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 siblings and his daughter, Barbara Hormell.

Funeral services will be held at1:00 p.m. at Logan 1st Ward at 100 South 200 West on Thursday, February 27.  Viewing to be held at Allen Hall Mortuary on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church Thursday morning from 11:30 to 12:30 before the funeral. Interment will follow at the Logan City Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be expressed online at www.allenmortuaries.net
