Thad August Carlson

February 26, 1932 — October 10, 2014

LOGAN, UTAH: Thad August Carlson, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather completed his life’s mission on Friday October 10, 2014 at the McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden due to complications following surgery.
Thad was born Feb. 26, 1932 in Richmond, Utah to Victor August & Eva Leona Hansen Carlson. He was the 9th of 14 children, two of whom died as babies and the other remaining 12 tribes wandered through the wilderness. Thad was a graduate of North Cache High School and attended night school at USU & Weber State.
Thad learned to work on the Richmond family farm and in the family sawmill in Emigration Canyon where he learned to ‘serve on the first of many boards.’ He married his youthful sweetheart, Carroll Plowman of Smithfield, Utah on June 15, 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple and together created a loving family of seven children. They moved 38 times in their married life, finally settling in Logan, Utah where they have lived the past 49 years.
Thad will be remembered for his service, generosity, and willingness to loan tools or help others. He enjoyed fixing things for his family and neighbors. He loved to help everyone with their wiring projects, and enjoyed helping neighbors put up Christmas lights and remove snow in the winter. He had a strong sense of “community service.” He served as president, vice president, and director for the Cache Chamber of Commerce, served 4 years on the Logan School board, 4 years on the Logan City council, he was a member and officer of the Logan Rotary Club, served on the board of the United Way, was vice president and on the board of the Boy Scout Council, recipient of the BSA Silver Beaver award, and he served as co-chairman of the “new Logan Regional Hospital Fund Drive” helping raise 3 million dollars to build the hospital. Thad served on the Cache and State Economic Development Boards. His family helped establish the Utah Chapter of the Tourette Syndrome Association [TSA], and he and his wife Carroll have been active with NAMI [National Alliance for Mental Illness] for many years.
From October 1950 to Feb. 1986 he enjoyed working for Mountain Bell Telephone Company in locations throughout Utah and Idaho. He was a lineman, cable splicer, installer, repairman, marketing rep, business office rep, sales engineer, and manager in both the Brigham City and Logan offices. Following retirement with the phone company he worked 8 years in Real Estate. He also spent over twenty summers helping his brother, Ken, at his Alaskan commercial salmon fishing site.
Thad is a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with an unwavering testimony of the Savior. He has held many positions such as home teacher, scouting and youth leader, teacher, served on four different High councils, served in a bishopric and as a Bishop, served in a stake presidency and as a Stake President, served as Logan Temple officiator and sealer for 19 years, and served as a Stake Patriarch. He and Carroll served a mission to the Denver Colorado North Mission in Wyoming.
Thad was devoted to his wife and family. He loved to laugh and play goofy things with his posterity, especially “Mousey-Wousey, and Suzanne was a Funny Old Man”. He will be lovingly remembered for his dry wit and humorous one-liners. Surviving are his eternal companion Carroll, and six of his seven children, Kay Thad, aka Jake [Kim] Arvada, CO; Kathryn [Vaughn] Cook of Mapleton, UT; Debra Zamora, Riverside, CA; Scott Gerald (Brenda) of Rochester NY, Julie [Hal] Huppi of Logan, UT, Paul Jeffrey [Tena] Holladay, UT; 33 grandchildren, and 55 great grandchildren, as well as 7 siblings; Doyle, Carol, Tess, Reta, Carl, Druce, and Joe.
