Thelma Elizabeth Owen Jorgensen, 90, our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home, March, 10, 2009 of causes incident to old age. It was her desire to stay in the home she loved to the end of her days and with help from her family and her fierce independence she was able to do so.
She was born May 9, 1918, in Preston, Idaho, the sixth child of Earnest and Matilda Owen. She graduated from Preston High School and attended Henager's, Business College on scholarship. After graduating, she returned to Preston where she was employed as a bookkeeper for Franklin County Grain Growers.
She married Arthur W. Jorgensen July 11, 1941, in the Logan LDS Temple. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage until his death in 1993. They lived in Salt Lake City, Magna and Cheyenne, Wyoming, before buying Logan Monument and Vault Company in Logan. She worked side by side with her husband operating the business while raising their six children. She was later employed by Cache County Recorder's Office and then by an insurance company.
Thelma was a gifted pianist even though she had limited lessons. She traveled extensively with her husband and children. She was a skilled seamstress and homemaker and taught those skills to her children. She loved to dance, read and cook. Much time was spent camping, hunting and fishing with her family. She served in the PTA and in many church callings. She was a dutiful, loving daughter and wife caring for her parents and husband during their lingering illnesses. Last May, she enjoyed her 90th birthday celebration surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy and we will miss her terribly.
Thelma is survived by her children: Jolene (Bill) Workman; Geraldine (Gary) Niederhauser; Diane (Dee) Hadfield; Clair Jorgensen; Gary (Talia) Jorgensen; Gay Etta (David) Hemingway and 28 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Willard Jorgensen, two sisters and four brothers.
Services will be held at noon Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center with a viewing from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at
