Theron (Ted) Kevin Coats of Wellsville, Utah was called home to his Heavenly Father on March 10, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends during his time of passing. His heart and legacy will continue to live through those who love him and in his dream home he helped build for his family.
Ted was born April 4, 1959 in Saco, Maine to Max and Mae ( Hayward ) Coats. At the age of nine, he moved to California with his family. He graduated from Vintage High school of Napa, CA in 1977. He served a short tour in the US Coast Guard before serving four years in the US Air Force as a weapons controller. In 1979, Ted married Elizabeth Ann Bohnet of Vallejo , CA. Ted continued his government service by becoming an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA, which he performed for over 25 years.
Ted was a resident of Alaska for over twenty years before moving to Utah in 2000. It was here he became an avid outdoorsman. Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, scuba diving and Class V whitewater rafting was his lifestyle. Ted was also an accomplished bicycle racer.
Ted’s greatest satisfaction in life came after his move to Utah when he joined the Davis County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team. He served in several leadership positions including Water Team leader where he was a Master Scuba Diver. Ted was the rescue unit’s member of the year for 2006.
Ted was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, but his favorite was to work with the scouting program.
Ted is survived by his parents, Max and Mae Coats of Piney Flats, TN; his lovely wife of 28 years, Beth; two daughters, Kellie Elizabeth (Dustin Davis) of St. George, UT, and Jennifer Faith Coats; and two sisters, Leslie Marie (Ronald Bales) of Tipton, IN and Lisa Ann (John Varney) of Bristol, TN. Ted is preceded in death by his grandparents, Wade and Vera Coats of Alma, NY; and Martin and Ester Van Buran of Nashua, NH.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 15, 2008 in the Wellsville Stake Center in Wellsville, Utah. A viewing for family members and close friends will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary on Friday, March 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Services will be conducted by Bishop Bruce Horracks. The Davis County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team will serve as pallbearers with the following honorary pallbearers: Jim Murray of Wellsville, UT; Max Coats, Robert Bohnet of Benicia, CA, John Bohnet of Benicia, CA, Gene Burker of Lehi, UT, Scott Sherwood of Marion, IA, Robert Bechtold of Eagle River, AK, and Dustin Davis.
