Thomas Raglan Winings

June 26, 1944 — September 23, 2023

Thomas Raglan Winings passed away peacefully on September 23, 2023 at age 79 from Parkinson’s Disease. He was born the second of three children on June 26, 1944 in Decatur, Illinois to Ernest and Mary Winings. Tom grew up on a dairy farm in Lovington, Illinois. He learned to work hard milking cows and planting, weeding, and harvesting soybeans, corn, oats, wheat, and hay with his father and older brother.

In high school, Tom earned the Eagle Scout award and won the Future Farmers of America state public speaking contest. After graduating from Lovington Illinois High School, he attended the University of Illinois, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and enjoyed serving as president of the Varsity Men’s Glee Club his senior year. Following college graduation, he served his country in the United States Army for two years. Upon honorable discharge, he returned to the U of I where he completed a Masters Degree in Communications with a Minor in Marketing.

On March 10, 1973, Tom became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He moved to Utah in August 1976 to find his sweetheart. There he met Helen Heggie from Clarkston, Utah, who also grew up on a farm. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 4, 1977. Tom and Helen are the parents of four children: Emily (Warren) Spencer, John (Anni) Winings, James Winings, and Jared (Erin) Winings.

Tom’s career path included working for Proctor and Gamble, Drackett, Sorenson Research, Abbott Laboratories, and Ohmeda, in the capacities of Sales Manager, National Trainer, Product Manager, Market Research, and Director of Marketing. In 1990 he started his own business, The Medical Product Manager Institute, a company dedicated to training medical product managers. He presented his courses throughout the United States and internationally.

Tom was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a ward mission leader, stake high councilor, bishop, stake executive secretary, family history teacher, and various other callings. He and Helen served full-time missions to Indianapolis, Indiana and Jacksonville, Florida, and served as temple officiators in the Logan Utah Temple.

Tom loved people. He always extended himself to others. In Providence, Utah he had a number of friends and widowers he liked to go out to lunch with. He had some neighborhood boys he liked to tag and tell, “you’re it!”

Tom’s family meant everything to him, and he spent as much time with them as possible. He is survived by his wife, Helen, brother John (Debbie) Winings, sister Susie (Gary) Kopacz, four children and their spouses, and twelve grandchildren.
