The LEGENDARY TOM SCHOOLEY returned home to the loving arms of our father in heaven on May 23, 2009. He couldn't have written a better death for himself. After a pain in his chest he died a few short minutes later in the arms of his loving wife, in his favorite camping spot up Blacksmith Fork Canyon. He was born September 5, 1947 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He moved to Logan as a young child and has lived here ever since. He loved his mother and all eight of his siblings. The “Schooley Clan” always stuck together through everything and he was always there for them all.
Tom was loved by all and was the one that you could always depend on no matter what. He would drop everything to help another in need. In the winter Tom would get up early and make sure his loved ones were shoveled out on his block. He was “Uncle Tom” to many who needed a great man like him in their lives. Tom loved his family more than anything in the world, especially his beautiful wife. He supported his family in everything they did; he never missed a football game, and was to EVERY dance performance his daughter had for 10 years. He loved all his children and would have done anything for them.
Tom was a goof ball and would do everything in his power to make you smile. He had the best work ethic of anyone in this world. He slaved away on hot roofs for 50 years and never complained once. He was the most unselfish person and sacrificed everything for his family; he went without to ensure that they never had to. Tom was without a doubt the toughest man in Cache Valley, many can attest to that. He always stood up for what he believed in and those he loved. You could always count on Tom Schooley to back you up or defend you in times of need.
He served in the armed forces and bravely enlisted to fight in Vietnam for three years. He loved his country and was proud to be an American. He loved camping and was called the “Mountain Man” by many. Camping was the only vacation he ever took in his life and it was never more than a weekend at a time. He loved being in the mountains with his family and friends dancing and playing his air guitar to his music around the fire. He loved music, especially Eric Clapton. He went to hundreds of concerts in his life, and at a recent ZZ Top concert his beloved beard got him confused for the headliner himself.
Tom loved his savior Jesus Christ and after a long wild life he changed everything for him. He gave up his wild ways and was an amazing example of will power; once he committed himself he never went back. He faithfully served in many church callings and was a great home teacher. He went through the temple and was sealed with his family for time and all eternity in 1997.
He was proceeded in death by his sister Jeanine “Petey” Boyce, his son Ronnie Lamar, and by his father Paul Thomas Schooley. He is survived by his wife Sandy Jessop Schooley, his sons: Tom (Virginia), and Rick (Ann); his daughters: Amber, Marjorie (Ron), and Cindy (Mike); his mother Marjorie Nelson; his brothers: Joel Patrick (Julie), Bernie (Mary); his sisters: Karen, Paula (Tom), Denise (Mike), Mary Ellen (Bruce), and Kristie (Jack). We will miss you Tom as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend; when our Irish Eyes are smiling we'll be coming home to you. You will especially be missed by your love until you meet again.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 29 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 East Center St in Logan.
