Vance Budge Waite passed away peacefully at home early Thursday morning, December 18, 2008 at the age of 88.
He was born February 6, 1920, in Hyde Park, UT, the fifth of seven children, to Jesse Noble Waite and Katherine Woodruff Waite. He attended schools in Hyde Park and Richmond, and afterwards worked on his uncle’s ranch until his twenty-first year when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served for the duration of the war in the Quartermaster Corps, participating in the invasion of the Philippines at the battle of Leyte Gulf.
After the war, Vance returned to Cache Valley, the place he loved best and there met his sweetheart, Margene Cox. They were married on July 16, 1947 in the Logan LDS temple, and eventually made their home in North Logan.
Early in their marriage Vance worked at the US Military depot in Ogden, commuting back and forth each day. Never one to fear hard work, his other jobs included being a bricklayer and beekeeper, all at the same time. Vance worked many years for the Culligan Water Company, and later became the Recorder for North Logan City, where he retired in 1985.
He loved baseball, gardening, fishing, raising his sheep, and in general enjoyed being outside. Vance was a gentle, kind man who always had a concern for others, a twinkle in his eye and the greatest sense of humor, which we will miss more than we can ever say.
Vance was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and had a powerful faith and testimony. He is survived by his wife Margene Waite of North Logan, son Robert (Vinnie) Waite of LeMoore Ca, and daughters Linda (Peter) VanOrden of Salt Lake City, UT, Gayla (Barry) Foster of Hyde Park, UT and Janet (Ed) Bala of Pocatello, ID, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express appreciation to Hearts and Hands HomeCare, Primrose Hospice, and the wound care clinics at Logan Regional Hospital and Cache Valley Specialty Hospital. And a special thanks to neighbors: the Mulls, the Jacksons, the Jensens, the Augers, and Lou Wilhelm.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Allen Mortuary, 420 E. 1800 N., North Logan, UT. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 29, 2008, at 12:00 noon, with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the L.D.S. North Logan 7th Ward, 1850 N. 400 E., North Logan, UT.
