Velma B. Scofield
LOGAN-Velma Bunderson Scofield, 86, passed away November 15, 2009 due to complications from advanced Parkinsons disease. Born May 19, 1923 in St. Charles, Idaho, to Boone and Augusta Pehrson Bunderson. Velma married her highschool sweetheart, Lloyd Lamont Scofield. Lloyd died June 1985.
Velma graduated Paris High School in 1941. She married Lloyd on May 18, 1942. She wanted to be 18 when she was married. When Lloyd and Velma were first married and before Lloyd left for duty in Guam, they lived in Salina, KA and San Diego,CA. After the War, they made their home in Montpelier, Idaho. Velma worked for Safeways and Broulims for 30 years.
Mom was a very good homemaker; had the cleanest home, whitest wash, greenest grass and prepared a hot homemade dinner complete with desert every day. She started working at Safeway in 1959 to assure that her daughters could graduate from college and that the cabin she and Lloyd were building would be completed. Even while working full time, her household duties continued on the same schedule and to the same high standards. She felt any job worth doing was worth doing well. She enjoyed working with all of the people at Safeways and Broulims and spoke fondly of the managers she worked with. She especially enjoyed the young bag boys and took it upon herself to befriend them. Her capacity to remember names was remarkable. She and her sisters could give you a genealogical breakdown of most of the residents in Bear Lake County.
Many happy memories were made at the cabin on the shore of Bear Lake. Much of the fun was in the building; from swampy ground that had to be drained, to felling of just the right size trees for the logs. Family, fellow employees, friends and neighbors were entertained at the cabin. Mom and Dad loved that their daughters married brothers and treated them like sons. They were very saddened by Rick and Brenda's divorce.
A close friend, Gene Burdick, taught Mom the true meaning of friendship. He was always attentive to her wants and needs and made sure everything he helped her with met her exacting standards. For the last year, Mom always knew Gene was just a block away and would come whenever she needed him.
Survived by a daughter, Dianne (Bruce) Hall, Logan; grandchildren, Heather Hall, Logan; Jennifer (Shea) Bettencourt, Logan; John "Murf' Hall, Seattle, W A: Jocelyn Hall, Kaysville; Katrina Hall, Logan; Brent Singelton, Kaysville: two sisters, June Bunderson, Montpelier; Rula (Cloyd) Minor, Pocatello; sister-in-law, Edna (Ken) Stoll, Brigham City. Great grandchild, Boone James Bettencourt.
Preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Brenda Kay Scofield; grandson, Travis Roger Hall; sisters: Virginia (Deverl)Whittington, Elaine (Durwood) Perkins and son-in-law, Richard Hall.
The doctors, nurses and all the aides and staff that work at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital and Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center gave Mom excellent and loving care. The day-to-day care givers are truly Saints and their reward will surely be huge in Heaven as they are not compensated or thanked enough for the remarkable work they do.
