Vera Marie Bailey Young Andreasen
Vera passed away June 11, 2012, in Logan, UT. She was born December 22, 1913, in Pocatello, Idaho, to George Albert Bailey and Effie Elizabeth Rogers and was the fourth of eight children.
She spent her early childhood in Pocatello, Idaho where her father owned a grocery store. She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1932 and attended the Idaho Southern Branch (later called Idaho State University) graduating in May of 1935.
Her first teaching assignment was at Cleveland Idaho Elementary School where she was paid $75 a month for eight months, teaching four grades of 36 children. There was no electricity in the town, gas lanterns and coal oil lamps were used. She later taught at Thatcher Elementary School for over 30 years and also was Principal at the school. She had a deep love for the children that she taught and was thrilled to see them learn.
Vera served as vice president in Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society and was president of the Idaho Teachers Association as well as the Grace Teachers Association. She was a member of the State English and State Principals Association and the National Education Association. She held many other memberships and enjoyed her work.
Vera married Brigham Lowe Young on May 27, 1940, in Tooele, UT. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple. Brig and his brother Howard, owned cattle ranches in Thatcher and Soda Springs, Idaho. Vera & Brig lived on the ranch in Thatcher while she taught school. Vera and Brig later retired to North Logan, UT. Brig passed away in August 1979.
They have 3 three daughters: Joyce Ann (Dean) Adams of Logan, UT., Jean Marie (Lee) Bowman of Kennewick, Washington, and Betty DeVone (Owen) Ashbaker of Pleasant View, UT. She has 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grand children and one great-great grandchild.
She served faithfully in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints including a mission to Independence, Missouri and 13 years in the Logan Temple. She toured Europe, South America and her favorite trip was Jerusalem, Israel.
In 1989 she married Owen Lavor Andreasen and they traveled together to Hawaii and on many other trips. Owen passed away in May 2009. Vera loved her step children Val Gene (Janice) Andreasen, Jay (deceased), Sherrill Ann (Larry) Raymond and Janene (Robert) Markham and their children.
At her passing, Vera was 98 years old. She enjoyed quilting with her daughter, Joyce and they have won many awards at quilt shows. She enjoyed reading, gardening and going to operas with Joyce.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Lundstrom Park 2nd Ward Chapel, 1260 North 1600 East, Logan. A viewing will be on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m at the Allen Mortuary of North Logan, 420 East 1800 North and on Friday at the church from 9:30-10:30 a.m prior to services. Burial will be in the Preston Cemetery approx. 2:30 p.m.
