Ruth Cranney Drury
Providence, Utah –Vera Ruth Cranney Drury, 87, died Monday, May 10, 2010, at home. She was born January 12, 1923, in Oakley, Idaho, the daughter of Martin Wyndon and Elizabeth Matthews Cranney. She is together again with her sweetheart, Lloyd, whom she has missed.
She married Lloyd Allen Drury, on August 28, 1943, in Boise, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.
Ruth’s early years were spent on a potato farm in Oakley. She graduated from Oakley High School, then attended Albion State Normal School, Albion, Idaho, earning a teaching certificate and meeting Lloyd.
Ruth’s teaching career began at Kimberly Elementary School. She taught elementary school in Idaho, Nevada, and Utah. She was a teacher in Cache County School District at Providence Elementary until her retirement after 27 years of teaching. She was honored as Cache County School District’s Teacher of the Year twice, was active in education associations and community activities. She especially enjoyed teaching children to read and encouraged them to believe in themselves.
Not long after retiring, Mom cared for Dad with devotion for 10 years at home after he suffered a stroke. Mom and Dad were a team. They valued kindness, honesty, hard work and education. People and friendships were important to them. Mom along with Dad set a good example for their children in these areas, as well as in service to community and church.
Mom enjoyed camping, spring cleaning, gardening, playing bridge, good friends, family gatherings, good books, autumn, proper grammar, and sunsets.
She is survived by her two daughters and one son, Carol Marie White (Jeffrey), Providence, Utah; Amber Elizabeth Hill (Spencer), Manti, Utah; and John Lloyd Drury (Tammy), Sandy, Utah; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Diane Herndon (Jim), Salt Lake City, Utah, and a brother-in-law Max Williams (Joyce), Bend, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents, her sisters Kathlyn Mayes (Bill), Carol Ward (Glen) and Rachel Williams (Max).
The family extends sincere thanks for their genuine concern and loving care to Dr. Michael Stones, Dr. Thomas Higginbotham, Cache County Meals on Wheels, Sunshine Terrace Wing 7, caregivers in the last year, and most recently caregivers Katie Young, Crystal Blackburn, Pam Ballard, Chelsey Benesch, Kim Bergsjo, Ashley Nipper, Shandy Carter, Lauren Nicholson and Charleigh Petersen.
A celebration of her life will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at noon. A viewing will be held from ten to eleven-thirty prior to the service.
