Verdean (Dean) Helm Daugherty was born on July 28, 1936, in Smoot, Wyoming to Onos Claud Daugherty and Mary Jane Helm Daugherty. He was the second of four boys born to the family. His younger brother Ernie said, "He taught us everything a western Wyoming boy should know like how to skip a rock on water, how to throw (and catch) a football, and shoot a jump shot". Dean loved the outdoors and was a skilled fisherman, hunter, and camper. These were skills he eventually taught to his family and the youth in the Boy Scouts of America. Dean was a skilled athlete who competed in baseball and football. Dean passed away unexpectedly on April 16, 2022, in his sleep.
Dean met his beautiful bride, Marcia Evans while attending Utah State University. They married on August 10, 1956, in the Logan Temple and had 6 children together: Cherrie (Dan) Werling, Michael (Michelle) Daugherty, Kevin (Teresa Anne) Daugherty, Christopher (Angela) Daugherty, Tammy (Spencer) Hardman, and Kathleen (Christopher) Warner. Dad's greatest joy is his 20 grandkids and 22 great-grandkids, with more on the way! He loved taking them fishing where he would judge who caught the most fish, biggest fish, and prettiest fish; telling them stories; and teasing them.
Dean and Marcia were very involved with the youth. It didn't matter the size of the group, they would break out the dutch ovens and feed everyone! He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his work with the Boy Scouts of America. Dean was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many callings including High Counselor, Counselor in the Bishopric, and Family History Consultant. His favorite callings were with the boy scouts and serving in the nursery with Marcia.
Dean earned a degree in Chemistry and worked at Thiokol for over 40 years. He was a jokester and had the nickname of "faux", pronounced fox. He engaged in good-natured teasing with his co-workers but was well-respected in his field. After retiring, Dean and Marcia loved to travel. They enjoyed seeing new places and meeting new people.
Verdean was preceded in death by his parents, Onos and Mary Daugherty; two brothers, Onos (Joyce) Daugherty and Terry (Sharon) Daugherty and his beautiful wife, Marcia. He is survived by his brother, Ernest (Donna) Daugherty, his 6 children, 20 grandchildren, and 22+ great-grandchildren. Verdean was an incredible man who will be missed by both family and friends.
We would like to thank Diamond Jane's Assisted Living and Active Hospice for everything that they have done for him this last year!
