He continued to dairy until he sold the cows in 2001. After that, he raised grain and hay until the time of his death.

In 1973, Verl and Helen were honored as the Farmers Home Administration National Farm Family of the Year. The family enjoyed a trip to Washington, D.C. and a visit with President Richard Nixon.

Verl served on the Cornish Town council as councilman and mayor for many years. He also served as a director at the Lewiston State Bank for more than 30 years and most recently served as the chairman of the board. Verl was also a director for Trenton Feed Cooperative and West Cache Canal Company.

He loved being with his grandchildren and watching their activities. He also enjoyed attending USU ballgames and watching Utah Jazz Basketball. Verl was always generous with this time and resources in helping his family and neighbors. He had great love and appreciation for all those people who shared their love and kindness with him throughout his life.

Verl was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various positions, including Cornish Ward Bishop and Benson Stake Presidency Counselor.
