Vernetta Rose Allen

July 1, 1922 — January 12, 2009

BENSON, UTAH - Vernetta Rose Hale Allen died January 12, 2009 at the Logan Nursing Rehabiltation Center in Logan, Utah. Vernetta was born July 1, 1922 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Golden Harris and Ellnora Rose Hale. She was the oldest of five chilren. Her mother, Elnora died when Vernetta was 17 years old. Her father then married Francella Callister.
Vernetta had many professional accomplishments in her life. In 1948 Vernetta went to Samoa with her parents, as her father served as the mission president. Vernetta was recruited as a missionary teacher to teach English at the local high school to native Samoan children.
After returning from Samoa Vernetta completed her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Utah in nursing and served as a nurse in the Army Nurse Corp of the military for two and a half years. Vernetta served throughout the Pacific on the USS Comfort. After the war she later became director of nurses at Holy Cross Hospital and LDS Idaho Falls Hospital. Vernetta always insisted her greatest accomplishments were her family, children, grandchildren and great granchildren.
Vernetta had many talents and shared those with all who touched her life. Vernetta enjoyed sewing and was an experienced professional seamstress. She also enjoyed cooking and was a world class chef, entertaining many with her delicious meals, and feeding many hungry farm workers with a decadent five course entree. Vernetta's talents were numerous; some of which include porcelain doll making, sewing Raggedy Ann and Andy, crocheting, knitting, embroidery work, oil painting and in general creating lovely things.
Vernetta married John Ernest Allen, Jr. on August 21, 1953. They settled in Benson, Utah in 1957 and made Benson their home. She left the bright lights of San Francisco, Fifth Avenue and Lilli Ann suits to settle as the best hired hand her husband could buy. Together they enjoyed many years of hard work on the dairy farm. Feeding calves morning and night became routine in her job description. She lived life to the fullest each and every day.
Vernetta was a faithful member of the LDS chruch and held many callings during her life. In 1989 she and her husband had the opportunity to serve in the Akron, Ohio mission where they made many dear friends. She and John were later called as temple workers in the Logan LDS temple.
