Vern Hill Haslam

Vern Hill Haslam passed away September 24, 2007 in Salt Lake City, Utah. A resident of Logan for nearly his entire life, Vern moved to the Salt Lake City area a few years ago after the passing of his wife to be closer to his son and daughter-in law and their families.

Vern was born April 29, 1919 in Lewiston, Utah to William J Haslam and Emma H Haslam. He married LaRue James on October 24, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. He received his education in the Cache County School District, Brigham Young University, the Colorado School of Banking and the Pacific Coast Banking School. After returning from World War II in 1945 he joined the staff of the First National Bank of Logan. By 1965 he had advanced to the position of Executive Vice President. He was appointed to Chairman of the Board in November 1974. He held this position until the Bank merged with Zions First National Bank on January 1, 1981. With the merger, Vern became Senior Vice President with Zions and manager of their Northern Region. He was later appointed manager of the Northern Division and also a member of the Senior Loan Committee. A prominent Logan banker for over 40 years, he was considered by his peers to be one of the leading agriculture bankers in the state. Along with his banking career, Vern was also a director of the Logan Chamber of Commerce and Logan Golf and Country Club as well as treasurer of the Cache Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He served two terms as Chairman of the Agriculture and Livestock Committee of the Utah Bankers Association and was also a director of the Utah Bankers Association and the Bear River Mutual Insurance Company. Vern was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 25th Infantry in Guadalcanal and the Philippine Islands. He was active in church, civic and banking functions in the Cache Valley for most of his life having served as Sunday School Superintendent, financial clerk and home teacher in the Logan 4th and 16th wards. At the time of his passing he was a High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Vern is survived by his son Terry (Mary) of Sandy, four grandchildren Kurtis (Traci), Michael (Kamie), Kristine (Darren) and Marc as well as eight great-grand children and his sister Lola Coleman. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife LaRue, his parents, brother William and sisters Eve and Edra.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Thursday September 27th, 2007 at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, UT. A viewing for friends and relatives will be held at the mortuary from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM on the day of the service. Interment at the Logan City Cemetery.
