LOGAN, UTAH: Villa Elizabeth Bailey Crowell, 89,
passed away Thursday, December 1, 2005 in Logan, Utah.
Villa was born February 12,1916 in Medford,
Massachusetts to Ernest Wing Bailey and Mildred Ellen
Cook Bailey. She married Prince Sears Crowell Jr. on
July 2, 1938 in Springfield, Massachusetts. They met
when Villa took the summer Invertebrate Zoology class
that Sears was teaching at the Marine Biological
Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Villa
graduated from Oberlin College in 1937 with a BA in
Biology. In 1962, she received a masters degree in
Library Science from Indiana University. She then
worked at the Halls of Residence Library at Indiana
University.
They had three children; Persis Ann, Polly Foster, and
Prince Sears 3rd (Skip). Sears and
Villa moved to Bloomington, Indiana from Oxford, Ohio
in September 1948. They spent most summers in Woods
Hole living in the house on Albatross street since
1938. Villa was active with the Children's School of
Science for many years. In more recent years she
helped at the WH Historical Museum and the MBL gift
shop. In Bloomington she served as a scout leader in
both boy and girl scouts, was active in the PTA at
University School, a member ofPEO, and the first
Presbyterian Church. After Sears' death in April 2002,
in January 2003, she moved from Bloomington to Logan,
Utah to be near Ann.
Villa is survived by her three children, Ann (Kent)
Morrison of Hyrum, Utah; Polly Feitler of Longmont,
CO: PS3rd (Skip) of Woods Hole, MA; 5 grandchildren
with 8 great-grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren and
19 great grands. She is also survived by sister Alice
B. Longley of Weston, VT; brother Karl Cook Bailey of
Longmeadow, MA; sister-in-law Olive C. Beverly of
Woods Hole, MA.
The family will plan a memorial service and burial in
Woods Hole in the summer of 2006. In Lieu of flowers
the family asks donations be made to the Sears Crowell
Scholarship Fund at Indiana University or a favorite
charity of yours.
