Virginia Daines Nelson

August 30, 1943 — October 23, 2011

Virginia Daines Nelson, 68, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2011 due to the effects of Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded by her husband and children. She was born August 30, 1943 in Logan, Utah to Earl Moroni and Menita Perkes Daines. She was raised in Hyde Park, Utah, and graduated from North Cache High School . She attended Utah State University where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education.

She married George Barrus Nelson on Nov. 24, 1965 in the Logan LDS Temple. They moved to Biloxi, Mississippi where George was serving in the the Air Force and Virginia taught school. From Mississippi they went to Duluth, Minnesota where their first two children were born. Returning to Utah they had 10 more children and lived in Logan, Hyde Park, Orem, and Farmington. Virginia spent her last 30 years in Logan.

As a youth she was active in 4-H and won awards and trips for her cooking and sewing. She had a great love for the outdoors and her gardens. She was also an avid reader and especially enjoyed LDS church history. Virginia was known for her many gifts and talents including sewing, cooking, making chocolates, painting, and gardening; it was said of her, “there wasn’t anything she couldn’t do.” She wrote and published a cookbook and for many years she ran a business from her home called “Ginny’s Jungle”, which included sewing, arts, and crafts. Virginia's most important accomplishment was her family.

She was a kind and selfless woman who loved others and loved to serve, first and foremost her family of 12 children and 53 grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in many positions including nursery leader, young women’s leader, camp director, gospel doctrine teacher, and relief society president. Before her illness she was passionate about humanitarian service spending many hours sewing and making quilts for those in need. You could always find some form of humanitarian project going on at anytime. She loved children and even until the last few weeks of her life children brought her the most joy. She will be remembered for her strength, humility and courage in the face of the challenges in her life.

She is survived by her husband George; children Gerald (Janice)Idaho Falls, Jeff (Suzanne) Frisco, TX, Jason (Nalyn) Hyrum, Brigeta (Darren) Benson, North Ogden, Justin (Tammy) Hyde Park, Shane (Katrena) Willard, Traci (Jed) Tolman, Chandler, AZ, Carrie (Steve) Nield, Farr West, Holly, (Randy) Gasaway, Stansbury Park, Tim (Toni) Nibley, Todd (Julie) River Heights, Tyler, Logan; 53 grandchildren, and 4 siblings; Mary Lou, Mark, Steven and Brian.
