Virginia Mae Tyner Van Orden died on June 14, 2008 in Logan, Utah from cancer. She was born May 26, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Orson Everet (Jerry) and Kate Naomi Paulson Tyner. In 1931 she moved with her parents to Lewiston, Utah and graduated from North Cache High School in May of 1942.
Virginia married Jay Dee Van Orden on December 19, 1941 in Lewiston at her parent’s home. Dee and Virginia lived for a brief time in Berkeley, California and for almost two years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while Dee served in the Navy during World War II.
She worked part time in her father’s Drug Store and with her husband in Van Plumbing and Heating.
She served as a teacher and a counselor in both the Relief Society and the Primary and as a teacher in Young Women’s in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She enjoyed doing most kinds of handwork, mostly knitting and needlepoint which she gave to her family and friends. For many years she contributed hand made dolls to Primary Children’s Medical Center at Christmas time.
Virginia loved Lewiston and compiled a history of the City in 1976 which was the background for a book she wrote with Gay Jorgensen and had published in 2007. She also wrote a family history illustrated with photographs which was given to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Virginia is survived by her children, Claudia V. Perkins of Moab, Utah; Kathy Lu O’Hara of Tucson, Arizona; and Jay Wallace Van Orden of Newport News, Virginia. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held in the Lewiston 3rd Ward Chapel on Saturday, June 21 at 11:00 AM with interment in the family plot in the Lewiston Cemetery.
