Walter Ray Scott

November 22, 1921 — March 21, 2009

Walter Ray Scott, 87, passed away peacefully at home in Providence, Utah, surrounded by his family, March 21, 2009.

He was born Nov. 22, 1921 in Banning, CA to Harry Henry and Bethel Alta Pursell. Dad spent his childhood and youth living in CA with various family members until he enlisted in the Army in February of 1940.

In the fall of 1943 and as part of his military service, Walt was assigned to a general basic engineering course taught in Logan, UT at Utah State University. In October of that year the USU Institute sponsored a “blind date” Halloween dance. Mona Floy Christensen was paired with Walt. After a long distance courtship and following his honorable discharge from the military, Walt and Floy were married in Tremonton, UT. Dec. 8, 1945.

After his graduation from Utah State University with a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering Walt went to work for the U. S. Geological Survey in 1949. The family subsequently lived in Riverton and Kemmerer, WY; Milford, PA.; Spokane and Tacoma, WA; Albany, NY; and finally Bismarck ND. Walt retired from the USGS in 1978 after a wonderful career spanning nearly 30 years.

Walt and Floy came to Cache Valley and built their dream home on the bench in Providence, UT where they have lived for the past 30 plus years. Retirement was a little too quiet so Walt took a job as Water Commissioner, serving water districts in Utah and Wyoming.

Walt was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 3, 1960 in Spokane, WA. He and Floy were later sealed in the Logan Temple, along with their 4 children, on April 3rd, 1963. His years of service in the LDS Church include scout leader, home teacher, Bishopric counselor, Bishop, Branch President, District Council member, Priesthood instructor, and Logan Temple worker. A memorable moment was when Elder Thomas S. Monson interviewed and ordained him a Bishop in December of 1967. Walt and Floy also served an 18 month Family History mission in Melbourne, Australia microfilming records. Their faithful service continues to bless their family and others.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Floy Scott of Providence; four children and their spouses, Jean and Bill Ray of Layton, UT; Jim and Janee' Scott of Las Vegas, NV; Dennis and Janet Scott of Caldwell, ID and Mary and Steve Schirado of Providence; 15 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Walt has one living half-brother, Jack Minter of Glendale, AZ. He is preceded in death by his mother, father and sister Ann.

We wish to express a special thanks to Alpine Hospice for their kind and tender care of Walt prior to his passing with the most profound appreciation to Amy Godfrey, RN, who has provided unselfish and loving personalized care of Walt. We will be forever grateful to her.

Walter exhibited an unwavering love and devotion to his family though out his life. He had very high expectations for himself and his children, but was quick to forgive. Walt had a keen mind, especially for math. He had an engineer’s soul. Walt loved to travel with his beloved Floy. They have seen many parts of this beautiful earth together and with other members of their family. This truly remarkable man was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
