Wendell William Nielson

August 6, 1939 — July 17, 2023

Wendell William Nielson passed away peacefully on Monday, July 17, 2023 in Logan, UT.

Born on August 6, 1939, to Helen Mendelkow and William George Nielson of River Heights, Utah.

Wendell lived his first 10 years in River Heights before moving to Providence where they built a new family home. The oldest of four children, Wendell learned the value of hard work from both of his parents. From his father, he learned the skillful art of brick masonry to which he made his profession. His mother instilled in him the gift and love of gardening. He also learned to play the piano in his youth and later became an accomplished pianist and organist.

He attended school in Providence and graduated from South Cache High School. Following graduation, he attended Utah State University. Shortly after, he was called to serve on a 2 1/2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand. He thrived in his mission calling and loved teaching the Gospel to the Māori culture and people. He was asked by his Mission President to extend his mission to travel the country with him and play the piano for the Missionaries and the Saints of New Zealand.

As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings throughout his life, but one of his beloved callings was as the Ward Organist. He was a devout member of the Church and had a strong testimony of the Gospel that he shared through his music. He was also a faithful home teacher sharing the Word of Christ with others.

Wendell was a hard working, smart, kind-hearted, quiet, and funny man who loved his family and was a sports enthusiast. He loved going to Utah State football and basketball games with his brother Dave. He also loved watching professional sports on TV. Wendell loved to tease everyone, especially his brothers and sister when their teams lost and his favorite team, the New England Patriots, won.

Wendell married MaryAnn (Carpenter) and they were later divorced. They had one child together, a son Ronald. He was the light and joy of Wendell’s life.

He leaves behind his son Ron, brothers Gary (Marilyn), David, and sister Christine Behling (Robert), and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family and friends will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary 34 East Center Street, Logan, UT. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m. and be held at Providence City Cemetery 925 River Heights Blvd., River Heights, UT.
